Makima stood at the periphery of their banter, her presence a looming shadow that sent a distinct chill down the spines of Power and Denji. The usually radiant demeanor she held was now replaced by an icy, almost predatory aura.

Power gulped, her catlike eyes wide. "She's scary... and I'm a devil."

Denji, his earlier embarrassment replaced by a growing unease, muttered, "Why do I suddenly feel like I'm about to be squashed like a bug?"

Ryota didn't break a sweat. He met Makima's piercing gaze head-on, a smirk playing on his lips. "Makima-san, I didn't expect you to be the jealous type."

Makima's eyes narrowed slightly, the temperature in the room seeming to drop another few degrees. "Ryota, I advise you not to mistake my patience for leniency."

Without missing a beat, Ryota countered, "And I advise you not to mistake my defiance for ignorance. I know very well you wouldn't kill me... at least not yet."

Makima chuckled, a sound that didn't quite reach her eyes. "You're confident, I'll give you that."

Power and Denji exchanged a look, both feeling utterly out of their depth. Power muttered, "Humans are weird."

Denji nodded in agreement, "Yeah, like, super weird."

Makima's frustration with Ryota's defiance was palpable as they returned to their headquarters. She wasted no time in summoning Kishibe, her expression cold and determined. She had a plan to put Ryota in his place.

Kishibe entered the room, his usual stoic demeanor giving no hint of surprise at the request. "You want me to train him ruthlessly?" he asked, his gaze locking with Makima's.

Makima's tone was unwavering. "Break some bones if necessary. I'll provide the healers to fix him up, and then you can break him again."

Kishibe's eyebrow raised slightly, a flicker of concern crossing his features. "Makima, is this really necessary?"

Makima's gaze didn't waver. "He needs to learn his place. I won't tolerate insubordination."

Kishibe nodded, his expression returning to its usual calm. "Understood."

Without further words, he left the room to locate Ryota and carry out Makima's orders.

Kishibe, walking with the weight of years of experience, made his way to Ryota. He paused for a moment, his eyes assessing the younger devil hunter. There was a coldness to his gaze, but also a hint of curiosity.

"Makima sent you to me, huh?" Kishibe began, folding his arms. "I have to admit, you've got her more interested than she usually is. That's not necessarily a good thing."

Ryota shrugged. "We had our... differences. I guess she wants me to be 'properly' trained."

Kishibe chuckled dryly, "More like she wants you tamed. Or broken. Makima has her ways."

Ryota frowned. "I've heard stories about her. That she's manipulative, cunning. But she can't be that bad, can she?"

Kishibe's face darkened. "Never underestimate her. Makima isn't like us. She's... something else. She'll use you, discard you, or break you, depending on her mood."

Ryota met Kishibe's gaze squarely. "Well, let's get this training started then. Better to be prepared."

Kishibe nodded, taking a deep breath. "Alright then, kid. But remember, if you want to survive in this world, especially around her, you've got to be more than just strong. You've got to be smart. And always watch your back."
