Y/N: nick do you have any idea what we're meant to be doing???

Nick: YES.
SORT OF.
NOT REALLY.
PLEASE GET MY MOTHER.

Y/N: okok I'll get her

I run out of the living room and up the stairs and knock on nicks mums bedroom door

Y/N: sarah?! I think Nellies going into labour

There's a second of silence before the door flies open and Sarah's standing there in a nightdress and slippers

Nicks mum: is she ok? Whats she doing?

Y/N: panting a lot and stuff

Nicks mum: the vet said it could be any day now!

She hurtles down the stairs to her son and dog and I follow quickly

Nellies now begun to pace around the living room

Nick: don't we need to her into that puppy delivery box thingy???

Nicks mum: yes, the whelping box.

Nick: guides Nellie into the place designated for her birth of the puppies. The vet thinks there's about 4 of them.

Nicks mum: well the labour process couod last between 3 and 12 hours, so I suggest we take it in shifts watching her, since it's getting late

I'm not especially tired yet so I volunteer to take the first shift, followed by nick, then his mum, then back to me, in hour rotations.

I make myself comfy near Nellie on the floor while nick lays down on the sofa and Sarah lays on the thin fold up mattress they had been keeping downstairs in the build up to the puppy births.

My hour passes with little change in Nellies behaviour, she's restless and all I can do is comfort her until it's time to wake up Nick for his turn.

Y/N: your turn love

Nick: sleep well y/n

I take nicks place on the sofa and he plants a kiss on my cheek before going to sit where I was by Nellie

I fall asleep quickly and the next time I wake up it's Sarah gently nudging me awake for my next Nellie watch shift

I notice she's starting to become more uncomfortable and I can't help thinking It won't be long.

50 minutes of my shift passes and I'm just getting myself ready to go back to bed when Nellie starts to make an odd noise and starts... pushing?

I shake nick awake

Y/N: I think ones on its way!

Nick leans over and nudges his mum awake

Nick: they're coming!

Ten minutes later the first puppy is out and it's a spitting image of Nellie, sniffling and crying. Nellie is panting hard, she looks exhausted but happy.

For the next hour we watch and occasionally assist in the delivery of 3 more puppies, all of which looked almost identical to the first, though some had slightly more brown or white than others.

Nick: do you think that's it?

Nicks mum: I don't know, I'll stay up with her just in case

We're just about to settle back into bed when Nellie starts to push again

Y/N: another one?!

A few minutes later and I'm helping Nellie clean up a jet black puppy.

I look at the exhausted Nellie

Y/N: you're a mama

Nick smiles at me, as does Sarah.

Nick: we did it

Nicks mum: we sure did nicky
