I walk into Celine's room with a plate of food for her. I find her at her desk, moving fabric on her sewing machine. She doesn't look up at me, keeping her attention focused on what she's doing.

I say her name, but she doesn't hear me. I notice the earphones in her ears and just set the plate down beside her. She notices the movement and jumps, surprised, and takes her foot off the pedal, making the sewing machine pause.

She takes one of her earphones out. "Sorry. I was listening to music."

"It's okay, baby." I assure her. "I just brought dinner up for you."

"I'm not hungry." She says.

"I'll leave it here, so you can eat if it you decide that you are." I tell her. She doesn't reply, putting her foot back on the pedal. I look at her for a few more moments before leaving.

"Dad." Léo says as I leave Celine's room, walking down the hallway. I pause as he catches into step with me. "Can my friend come over for dinner later?"

"Who?" I ask.

"Her name is Gracie." He tells me, smiling a little as his cheeks become red. Interest flares to life within me, and I stop walking. He copies me.

"Is she your girlfriend?"

"Pfttt. No." He says, nervousness overcoming all of his features. "Girls are gross, dad."

I grin. "Mmm. Sure, baby, she can come."

He smiles again, but this time it's wider. "Thanks."

I nod. He walks away, and I debate in my mind wether to tell him about Celine now, but decide against it. I can tell him when his friend leaves.

"Celine." I shout up the stairs as I ascend them. I don't get a reply, so I walk to her bedroom door and knock before entering.

She's still at her sewing machine, listening to music through her earphones. She glances at me when I walk in.

"Dinner is ready, sweetheart."

She takes one of her earphones out. "What?"

"Dinner's ready." I repeat.

"Oh." She whispers. She looks at what she's done, reluctance plastered on her face, but then stands and takes her other earphone out, setting all her things beside her on the desk before stepping over to me. I smile at her.

"Léo's friend Gracie is here." I tell her, holding her door open for her. She curls her arms around herself.

"His girlfriend Gracie?"

I knew it.

"Yeah, I guess." I frown a little. Why didn't he tell me? "Are you ready for tomorrow?"
