Timeline: Middle of Grayson's story

Grayson ~

Everything was out in the open and Kincaid was finally aware of his feelings for Emma, but Grayson felt a wave of nervous energy settle over him as he sat down at the table.

Ice hasn't said a word. Not a single fucking word on the ride over here or since we sat down

Gunner's eyes were wide and alert as he took a seat, trying and failing to anticipate Kincaid's approach to this situation. Both men were silent observers as Kincaid lowered himself into a chair and ordered a beer without acknowledging them in the least.

"Ice I just wanna say..." Grayson started, but Kincaid cut him off.

"I'll deal with you in a minute. It's you I want to talk to first." Kincaid said as he pointed in Gunner's direction.

Sitting up straighter and clearing his throat as if he was participating in a job interview, Gunner readied himself for Kincaid's line of questioning.

"I'm an open book." Gunner said confidently.

"You said you had feelings for Charlie. What kind of feelings?"

Grayson could practically feel the tension radiating off of Gunner, hearing him clear his throat again before answering.

"I like her. I mean I like-like her." Gunner stammered.

Kincaid's head recoiled in confusion and he scoffed at Gunner's response.

"You like-like her? Seriously? How old are you?"

Wincing at his remark, Grayson turned to his head toward Gunner who shifted awkwardly in his seat as he reconsidered his answer.

"What I mean is, I care about her more than a friend. I'm not sure what my feelings are toward her because we aren't dating. We've hung out a few times, all of which you are aware of. I'd never date her without telling you."

Gritting his teeth, Grayson narrowed his eyes at his friend who had just thrown him completely under the bus.

Thanks for that, Gunner.

"When was the last time you saw her?" Kincaid asked in a skeptical tone.

"Last week, wednesday night. She called for a ride home after a night out. I let you know that I was going to get her and text you when she was home safe." Gunner's response was immediate without any hesitation.

"We'll just see about that. I happened to have texted her the same question on the ride over here. Let's see if your stories match up."

Kincaid was in full interrogation mode as he scrolled his phone for his sister's text, letting his eyes scan the screen.

Grayson knew Gunner wasn't lying because his body language was too relaxed. Gunner was confident and sure of his answer.

"What'd she say?" Gunner asked with a grin.

"She said you stayed the night. You conveniently left that part out." Kincaid added with some bite to his tone.

"Considering the fact that I had to carry her into her apartment over my shoulder, I didn't feel like she was in a safe enough state to be left alone." Another immediate and confident response that left Kincaid without a rebuttal.

"I'd never lie to you, Ice." Gunner added, causing Grayson to let out a frustrated huff of air.

Practically glaring at his friend, Grayson grit his teeth against the need to defend himself .
