To clear up some things Antonio never had romantic feelings for his little Lovi. He always looked at him as his child. Antonio has tried to marry tomatoes before so asking Lovi to marry him seemed natural because he cared about it. Antonio has a hard time distinguishing different types of love. He is still very protective of Lovi though and can be kind of a helicopter parent.
So he was not happy to find out about Lovi and Gilbert's relationship, it did not help that he walked in on them in a rather compromising position which lead to Antonio chasing a pantsless Gilbert around the Italy brothers' tomato farm with his battle ax and Lovi yelling at Antonio for interrupting them especially since he was fine.
(Lovi did find it pretty funny to see Gilbert's pasty ass running through the fields though, he won't say this out loud though.)
