a chance worth taking

( the present )

Inside of the grand walls of Auradon Academy sat Claire Fitzherbert in one of the two comforted chairs in-front of the fireplace in the soon to be kings dormitory.

Sat faced towards him, she giggled as Ben kept looking back her to make a face only for the tailor to turn his head once again. Making him look forwards towards the entrance of his room just in time to see his parents walk in.

Belle and her Beast.

"How is it possible that you're going to be crowned king next month? You're just a baby!"
King Beast said making his way towards the pair.

"He's turning 19, dear." Belle smiled as she patted the Beast on the arm.

"Hey, pops."

"19? That's far too young to be crowned king. I didn't make a good decision until I was at least 42."

"Uh, you decided to marry me at 28." Belle interrupted folding some of Ben clothes he had lying around. "Ah, it was either you or a teapot. Kidding."

Ben and Claire both chuckled at that.

Belle shook her head at her husband before moving toward the blonde girl who was now standing from the chair to give her greetings in the form of a hug. "Claire, dear. It's so lovely to see you."

"It's more then lovely to see you again too." Claire responded breaking away from the hug.

Ben smiled at the interaction between the two before he spoke as his mother went back to the beast. "Mom, dad... "

Just as he began about to move off from the platform the tailor stopped him going back to hemming the bottoms of his pants.

Claire giggled only for Ben to 'glare' at her which she returned by sticking her tongue out at him when his parents weren't looking.

"I've chosen my first official proclamation." Ben continues after see the proud look from his parents faces, knowing it'd be gone any second. "I've decided that the children on the Isle of the Lost be given a chance to live here in Auradon."

Belle let Ben's shirt she had been holding drop to the floor at that.

"Every time I look out to the island, I feel like they've been abandoned." He spoke steeping for the platform against the tailors wishes.

"The children of our sworn enemies, living among us?" King Adam questioned.

"We start out with a few at first, only the ones who need our help the most. I've already chosen them." As Ben began to explain his ideas to his parents Claire made her way towards him knowing how unsure he had been about sharing this with them before.

Once Ben noticed her presence beside him, he wrapped his arm around her waist gripping her dress a little to tight due to his nerves. All she could was place a comforting hand over his.

"Have you?" King Adam took a step forward.

Ben smile flattered a little at that.

"I gave you a second chance. Who are their parents?" Queen Belle nodded at Ben to continue.

Ben looked down a Claire for reassurance to which she nodded giving a smile for him to continue. Ben hadn't told her about who he chose when telling her of his plans but she was sure it'd be fine.

It will be fine. Right?

It wasn't like mother gothel had any children for Ben to give a second chance to.

"Cruella de vil. Jafar. Evil queen." He paused for a moment think over his next words, "And Maleficent."

Totally not fine.

The tailor let out a yelp at that as the current King began to raise his voice towards his son "Maleficent! She is the worst villain in the land!"

"Dad, just hear me out here," Ben begged.

"I won't hear of it. They are guilty of unspeakable crimes." As the argument broke out the tailor left the room in a rush, the guards near the doors closed them behind him.

Claire stepped away from Ben's side with wide eyes and went to stand infront of the window that over looked the isle. Ben watched her do so before turning back to his father.

"Dad, their children are innocent. Don't you think they deserve a shot at a normal life?"

Claire look over her shoulder form where she stood to catch the kings answer.

"Dad?"

A most a silence stilled the room as the Beast exchanged a look with Belle.

"I suppose their children are innocent." With that he began to make his way out of the room only to wait for his wife that exchanged words with her son.

"Well done." She smiles turning back to the beast linking arms before making their exit and leavening the couple alone.

Once his parents were gone Ben turned to admire Claire, the women he loves more then that four letter word could describe. Walking up behind her he wrapped his arms sours her waist resting his head on top of hers once she leaned back onto him.

"Claire."

"Maleficent, huh?" Ben hummed. "You know Audrey wouldn't be so happy about that when she hears."

"Then I'll make sure to be there when she finds out, I wanna see her reaction." He joked receiving a slap on the arm from his girlfriend who rolled her eyes.

Silence filled the room again as the pair stayed close together. Claire fiddling with the golden ring on Ben finger.

"Claire?" Ben asked wanting to know her thoughts.

"You're right," she began. "They deserve a chance no matter who their parents are, even if that is the daughter of Maleficent. It's a chance worth taking if they get to prove themselves."

Claire spoke knowing it was only fair. After all if her mother hadn't given her father a chance after he broke into her tower she would have never been here.

"Really?"

She turned around in Ben's arms to face him, placing a kiss on his cheek. "If you think it's a good idea," she cupped his face bring his closer to hers "— then so do I."

Once leaving a passionate lingering kiss on his lips which he returned Claire untangled herself from her lovers arms and made began to make her way out of his room. Walking backwards so she could still see him well she talked.

"I agreed to have lunch with Aud so I'll see you in a few hours," with that she turned around. "I'll send the tailor in again. Try not to move around so much this time."

"Alright. I love you." Ben called out to her before she could reach the doors.

"I love you too."

"Now and forever," they spoke together before going their separate ways for the afternoon.

Now and forever.
