Ember wakes up to Spoon stepping on her, begging the girl to get out of bed. Groaning and rolling over, pushing him gently. "Spoonie, it's my day off. Give it a rest." The cat sits and stares at her. Ember closes her eyes again, just for him to start stepping on her again. "Ughh, I'm up, I'm up." She reaches for her phone on the nightstand, reading the time of 8:26am. Rolling her eyes at her cat refusing to let her sleep in, she decided to check her Instagram after last night's performance. Her eyes widen in surprise as she looks at the analytics of the video of 'Afraid of Heights' she had posted from last night. It had gotten over a million views, 200 thousand likes, and hundreds of comments. She had gained at least a thousand followers, one blue checkmark catching her eye. Gracie Abrams started following you. Ember's hand flew to cover her mouth. Right above that, a new comment from Gracie Abrams. Saw your set last night, I loved this song! I especially loved the one before it 😉. Gracie motherfucking Abrams saw her perform last night. Gracie Abrams saw her cover 'Mess it Up' last night. And she liked it. Ember threw her phone on her pillow and screamed into her blanket.

After her fangirl-freak-out™, Ember got out of bed and got ready for the day. Sunday was her day off and she wanted to keep the momentum going with her music. Making a cup of coffee, Ember sat at her dining table, the sunlight coming in through the blinds and warming her. She let the bitter taste coat her taste buds, savoring it for a minute before opening up her laptop to check her email. Sipping carefully, Ember scrolls past a few promotional emails before her eyes stop. An email from Interscope Records.

With shaking hands, Ember set her ceramic mug down and clicked on the email. She read it once. Then again. Then again, not processing its content. She picked up her phone and dialed Rowan, completely forgetting the time. After a few seconds, she finally picks up. "Why are you calling before 9 on a Sunday, Em?" Rowan's raspy morning voice made it clear Ember had just woken her up, but she hardly noticed. "Row, Interscope Records emailed me. Someone on their label sent some of my videos, including the one I posted last night and they want me to send a demo and set up a meeting." There's a pause before Rowan responded, "Oh my GOD Ember! That's amazing! Did you email them back?" Rowan's excitement is infectious and it snaps Ember out of her disbelief. "I am right now, I'm going to send them a cover and a proper version of 'Afraid of Heights,' I can't believe this is happening!" "I'm so happy for you, you've worked so hard for it!" Ember's friend gushes. Then she remembers the other big news. "Oh Gracie Abrams was at the show last night, she started following me." Ember said casually, giddy inside. "LEIGH, get in here! Emmy's famous!" Rowan shouted, waking up her roommate. Ember heard their friend's grumbles on the other line but Rowan's excited rambling must have woke her up enough to understand because Leigh screamed "OH MY GOD EM! That's amazing!" Leigh was still shouting after her initial scream surely woke up their neighbors. "Oh my gosh. Guys, I have so much to do, I'm going to get demos together, a résumé and stuff, I need to email them back. I'll text y'all with any news, I just had to tell you." Ember breathed out, rubbing her hands on her face. "Yes, email them back right now, you have to come over later. We can talk about everything after." Rowan agrees, Leigh making a noise of affirmation in the background. "Okay, I'm going back to sleep. Ember, we're so proud of you!" Leigh leans into the phone and Rowan laughs. "Best wake up news ever but I'm knackered, mate. I'll text you!" They exchange goodbyes and Ember hangs up, still floating on air.

After taking another minute to process, Ember quickly drafts an email, attaching her best demos and her schedule. Double and triple checking it was professional and had proper grammar, she sent it. Spoon jumped up on the table, head-butting her and Ember picked him up gently, spinning around. She cradled him like a baby, "Spoonie baby, I think you were right. This could be it for us." He paws at her gently, meowing softly. "Are you proud of me?" Ember asks in almost a whisper, still swaying with Spoon around the room. He paws her face lightly, tears filling her eyes. She kisses his forehead and sets him down on his window seat. Internally rolling her eyes at her pathetic show of emotion, Ember sits back down, scrolling through the rest of her emails. A subject line something along the lines of studio time collaboration peaks her interest again and Ember opens it.

Good morning Ms. Ember Gray,

I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out at the request of my client, Gracie Abrams, regarding a potential collaborative studio session in the NYC area. If you have any interest, please email me back with your availability this week at your earliest convenience and I will send the necessary paperwork. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Alexandra DePersia

Her client. Gracie Abrams. Her client, Gracie Abrams. Requested her? Shaking her head and re-reading the email to make sure she wasn't dreaming, Ember runs her hands through her hair. "Spoon, she liked my set." The gray cat looks up at her like he's listening. "She wants to have a studio session. I think I'm going insane, Spoon boy."

Authors Note: i may have messed up the timeline, so for my sanity, music releases when i let it, don't think about the real dates. or i'll cry. also, how do y'all feel about this length of chapters, i think the first one was a little long.
