Alessandro POV
"You need a ride?" I asked my brother.

In the distance I could hear his voice, answering. He called my name, multiple times. I heard tyres screeching, and the piercing pain in my head returned, making me squint my eyes and cringe.

Slowly, my eyes opened and I tried to adjust to the bright lights above me.

I looked around the room as much as I could whilst trying to sit up, when a hand landed on my shoulder and pushed me up.

"Water... please." I groaned.

I heard heavy footsteps before a plastic cup was placed in my hands and an arm guided mine to help me.

I felt disoriented, confused. I remembered small details of what led to my being here, but I couldn't think straight.

I rubbed at my eyes to focus and saw a nurse standing beside me, asking me something.

I couldn't make out what she was saying, so I asked her to repeat.

"Your family are here, I will go outside and get them." She said with a smile.

I nodded in understanding then leaned back in my bed.

Looking around, I saw a vase of generic fake flowers sitting on the table beside me. A couple magazines were arranged in an ugly way to say the least.

The slight pounding of my head made it more difficult for me to zero in on anymore specific aspects, but one that I had to notice was the lack of security.

I couldn't see a single one of my men stationed outside the room, or inside. Many doctors and nurses rushed back and forth in front of my door but there was no one else in sight.

Fucking Tony.

I thought being my older brother, he would know the basics of our protection plans but no. He never failed to surprise me, but this? This was too far.

Then, the door creaked open and a comforting face poked their head around it.

"Mama." I smiled weakly.

"Ay, bambino mio. Come stai?"
[oh my child. how are you?]

"Could be better." I mumbled as she smoothed her hand over my hair.

She sighed and lifted my head to look at my face properly.

"Do you know who did this yet?" She asked, scrutinising every little cut she noticed.

I shook my head. "Where is Tony?"

"He took Nonna back to the house."

"And he didn't leave any security with you?"

She was hesitant, but shook her head no. "You've only just woken up Alessandro, and you're already thinking about work."

"Tony fucked up. You know this." There was only one person to blame for his mistake, but I couldn't cuss him in front of my mother. She would give me an earful if I did.

I opened my mouth to speak, but she stopped me.

"Don't even think about it, Alessandro. You will not-"

"Blame Papa." I finished for her. "Yeah. I know."

She shot me another look, but her gaze softened. I knew what she wanted to say, and she knew exactly what I was saying back.

He's a fuck up. You know it, and I know it too.
