( LEX ) It's 1995, Vic, whoever still thinks Metallica is the better band is seriously stuck in the past, man. When was the last good Metallica album released, seriously?

CHAPTER ONE.    caught in a mosh
woodsboro, september 28, 1995

There's hardly any customers in the aisle right now, the lights are flickering in an almost hypnotic way that makes Ronnie sleepy. Announcements and radio pop music flushing his ears from the speakers, and here he is, just staring at the shelf in front of him. Eyes focusing, unfocusing. He's not going to cry — that well's gone dry.

He's not even surprised. But it still stings. It's like someone thrust a sharp, broken bottle right into his heart. But Oh, Ronnie, you must understand, right? Surely you understand.

Yeah, he said, and when he said it, the tears were stinging in his eyes and he felt stupid. He stills feels stupid now. And now he's in the shampoo aisle at the grocery store, staring at coconut-scented products. How dumb. How pathetic.

The conversation is still playing in his head over and over and over. Stu, are you coming to our show next Saturday? Not like he promised three months ago when he first told him. Not like it should be a given. Stu's supposed to be his best friend. But no— Stuart already had other plans. But Ronnie had to understand, he said, because Billy was feeling really bad. His parents divorced, you see, and he's feeling like shit, and he really needs a friend right now.
