CHAPTER TEN.     fade to black
woodsboro, september 28, 1996

"What's your favourite scary movie, Ronnie?"

The air seems to freeze; when Ronnie takes a breath, it's sharp. He stares at Lex, takes a hand to his mouth, chewing on his nails.

"Who is this?" Ronnie knits his eyebrows. There's a sour, foreboding feeling in his stomach, like a premonition that something awful was about to happen.

"I asked you first," the voice breaths, and Ronnie tries to make out anything familiar at all, but can't. Probably a voice changer, he thinks, continuing to bite away at his nails. Lex now gets up, walks over to the window, anxiously peeking outside.

"Diyos ko," Ronnie mumbles beneath his breath, his lips shivering the faintest bit. He shuts his eyes tight. "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," he quickly says. He looks up at Lex, eyes locked on them. "I've seen it 56 times," Ronnie adds, his voice quivering, "34 times sober, 22 times stoned."
