CHAPTER FIVE. pulling teeth
woodsboro, september 26, 1996

Ronnie's just dozed off when the alarm clock goes off; he groans, but Lex already leans over, giving it a good smack so it stops ringing, then cuddles back up to him.

"How can you sleep?" Ronnie can tell from their voice that they couldn't have gotten a moment's shut-eye all night. He blinks at them, green eyes in the middle of a scowl staring back at him, almost like an accusation.

Ronnie shrugs. Maybe it's the horror movies. Maybe, before he fell asleep tonight, his brain convinced itself that what it saw was just another movie; a staged corpse, set dressing, fake blood that Casey Becker could just wash off at the end of the day. Maybe it's the fact that Ronnie's used to going to bed scared; many nights he anticipated his father coming in, body tense whenever a shadow passed in the hall, but by now he grew numb and could sleep in any situation.

"I seriously don't understand, Ronnie," Lex sits up, running a hand through their hair. "How can you sleep after what we saw?" It's still there — that accusing tone. Ronnie props himself on his elbows, furrowing his brows.
