DIVINATION CLASSROOM - MORNING
[The students gaze into crystal balls, faces reflecting the mist within, so that their very skin seems to be made of smoke. Conspicuously, Anna and Rose sit apart.]
Professor Trelawney: Crystal-gazing requires that you clear the Inner Eye. Only then, will you... See. Oh my, what do we have here...? [As Trelawney eyes Anna's crystal, Rose rolls her eyes.]
Lily does the same.
DIVINATION CLASSROOM - MORNING (LATER)
[As the students exit, Rose, walking separately from Anna. Rose stops, glances at Anna, then moves off. Anna watches her go, along with the others, then spies crystal ball lying on the landing. Anna sets crystal back on its stand, starts to go, when... the smoke within the crystal suddenly darkens. Leaning close, Anna watches the shape that appears. It is unmistakable: Sirius Black.]
Everyone looks nervous.
[Just then, a shadow crawls the glossy surface of the crystal and a hand snatches Anna's shoulder. She wheels.]
Anna: Professor Trelawney --
Professor Trelawney: He will return tonight.... [Anna stiffens. Trelawney's voice is eerily hollow.]
Anna: S-sorry?
Professor Trelawney: Tonight, when the clock strikes twelve, the servant shall break free. He and his Master shall be reunited. It cannot be prevented.
Everyone looks scared.
[Trelawney smiles savagely... then her head falls forward. When it rises, she blinks, eyes the hand that lies upon Anna's shoulder. Her hand.]
Professor Trelawney: So sorry, dear girl. Did you say something? [Her voice is normal once more. Anna shakes her head.]
"She finally makes real prophecy and doesn't even remember it?" Said Barty.
Anna: No. Nothing. [Anna -- clearly unsettled by her encounter with Trelawney -- hastens down the stairs.]
HOGWARTS CASTLE - BRIDGE - LATE AFTERNOON
[Anna is leading Rose toward Hagrid's hut.]
Rose: I can't believe they're going to kill Buckbeak!
Anna: It just got worse.
"I am afraid to ask what worse could happen." Said Lily.
SUNDIAL GARDEN-AFTERNOON
[Malfoy, along with Nott and Zabini, lurks within a grouping of monolithic menhirs, binoculars in hand, spying on Hagrid, who stands in the pumpkin patch, tossing dead ferrets to Buckbeak.]
James and Sirius groan after seeing Silver trio.
[Hagrid wipes his eyes, lopes into the hut.]
Cassie: Did you see that blubbering oaf?! Oh, this is going to be rich. Did I tell you, Father said I can keep the head --(looking up) Ah. Come to see the show?
"Lucius!" Scolded Narcissa.
Anna: You... evil... little cockroach...
[Malfoy stumbles back against a tree, Anna jabs the tip of her wand under her nose.]
Cassie: (maniacal grin) Do it! Come on, Potter! Do it! Do it! Do it!
"She is crazy!" Said James.
"She has Black madness." Said Sirius. Lucius, Regulus and Narcissa glared at them.
Rose: Anna! No! Sh's not worth it. [Anna nods, then -- SMACK! -- quick as lightning, lands a looping right to Malfoy's jaw, putting her flat on her back.]
"That's my pup/ little flower!" Cheered Sirius and James. Lucius stands up to attack them, but is stopped by invicible force.
[Stunned, she leaps to her feet and hits Anna back. Rose tries to interfene, but Theo and Blair hold her back. Anna tries to hit back, but Cassie stops punch and trips her and hits Anna in the face again, which couses Anna's nose to break. After that, Cassiopeia gracefully stands up and straightens her clothes like nothing happened and walks away with Theo and Blair, who let go of Rose. Rose runs to assist Anna.]
"That's my daughter!/ my niece!" Cheered Lucius and Regulus loudly.
SLOPE/PUMPKIN PATCH - LATE AFTERNOON
[Anna and Rose make their way down the slope and past Buckbeak, chewing on a ferret with idle satisfaction.]
HAGRID'S HUT
[Hagrid stands by the window watching Buckbeak. Anna sits. Rose makes tea.]
Hagrid: Look at 'em. Loves the smell o' the trees when the wind blows...
Rose: I say we set him free.
"Then they will arrest Hagrid." Said Barty.
Hagrid: (shaking his head) They'd know I did it. And tha' would only get Dumbledore in trouble. Gonna come down, yeh know. Says he wants ter be with me when it... when it happens. Great man, Dumbledore.
Rose: We'll stay with you too, Hagrid.
Hagrid: Yeh will not! Think I wan' yeh seein' a thing like this! No. Yeh'll drink yer tea an' be off. But there's jus' one thing... [Hagrid turns, takes the lid from a flour tin, A tiny heaf, ears flecked with powder, emerges.]
Rose: Scabbers! You're alive!
"She should after him better." Said James and Sirius and Remus nodded.
Hagrid: Yeh should keep a closer eye on yer pets, Rose.
Rose: I try, but one cat has been trying to catch him for a whole year. I can't keep track of him. [SMASH! A glass jar on the shelf shatters. As Rose scoops up a jagged star-shaped stone, a second stone bounces off the back of Anna's head.]
Anna: Ow! [Anna turns, looks out the window.]
Rose: Hagrid... [Everyone turns. Looks. Dumbledore and Fudge approach. Behind them, in a fluttering shroud of crows, the Executioner follows, axe at his side. Hagrid begins to panic.]
Hagrid: Yeh got to go! It's almost dark.
Anyone sees yeh outside the castle it'll be trouble! Big trouble! 'Specially you, Anna -- [BANG! BANG! BANG! The door shakes. Hagrid stiffens in fear. Anna reaches up, puts her finger to Hagrid's trembling lips, speaks softly to the Rose.]
Anna: C'mon.
HAGRID'S HUT - PUMPKIN PATCH - WIDE SHOT - DUSK
[As the duo exit through the back door, Fudge, Dumbledore and the Executioner enter through the front. A veil of crows flutters onto the roof. More drop into the patch, begin to slowly circle Buckbeak. Anna and the others duck behind the pumpkins, watch Hagrid solemnly greet the others. Fudge appears at the window. Picks his nose. Just then, a Shhh! is heard.
Rose turns. The branches of the trees behind her are dancing oddly.]
Anna: What?
Rose: Nothing, I just thought I saw... Never mind.
Everyone is in suspition.
SUNDIAL GARDEN - DUSK
[The duo slip silently into a stand of trees. Beyond them, Hagrid's hut glimmers desolately in the dying sun. High in the clock tower, a bell begins to toll. DING! DING! DING! The duo stops, fighting their tears. A quartet of bleak shadows files from the hut. One of the shadows -Dumbledore -- raises his hand and points, directing the attention of the others away from Buckbeak. Dumbledore speaks briefly -- unintelligible from this distance, then -- CAW! CAW! -- The crows shriek excitedly and the Executioner separates from the others, disappears behind a low stand of trees. DING! All goes very still. The wind loses its voice... DING! Sunlight kicks off the axe as it rises over the trees, into view... DING! The ax hangs seemingly forever, etched against the sky, then drops from sight. A sickening chop! fouls the breeze and Rose and Anna stare toward the trees in numb disbelief.]
Lily looks sad. Marauders glare at Lucius.
[DING! The sun sets, dropping behind the mountains in the distance. Drop of blood hangs from Rose's finger, drops like a tear... DING! Rose stares at her hand. At the blood running down her finger.]
Rose: He bit me... [Her eyes shift.See Scabbers streaking away. As Rose pelts after Scabbers, Anna gives a chase.]
RIDGE
[Rose reaches the summit, disappears over the top. Anna follows.]
WHOMPING WILLOW
[Anna reaches the top of the ridge. Stop. Rose nabs Scabbers, cradles him in her bloody palm.]
Rose: Now behave yourself. [Camera pulls back: Rose is kneeling under the Whomping Willow.]
"GET OUT OF THERE!!" Yelled worried Lily.
Anna: That's not good. (yelling) Rose! Run! [Rose spins. Looks toward Anna.]
Rose: Anna! Run! [Anna's eyes shift. Bounding toward her in the gathering gloom is an enormous, Pale-eyed, Jet-black... dog. Anna shields herelf when... the dog leaps clear over her.]
Sirius looks down at his hands with tears in his eyes.
Rose: Aaaahhh! [The dog's teeth flash and -- SNAP! -- close on Rose's hand, dragging her towards the trunk. Instantly, Anna dashes forward, leaps out, and grabs Rose's other hand... but she and Rose just keep skudding along the ground.]
Rose: Anna! [Anna raises her chin. The dog vanishes into the gap at the base of the tree, begins to pull Rose through...]
Anna: Hold on, Rose! [But it's no use. The dog is too powerful. Anna glances around desperately, then finds herself looking directly in Rose's eyes. She can read her mind.]
Anna: No, Rose... [One by one, Rose releases her fingers from Anna's forearm. Sacrificing herself.]
"Nooo!" Yelled Griffindors.
Anna: Nooooo!!! [But Rose closes her eyes, releases her hands fully, and disappears. As her voice echoes deep into the earth... Anna rises, peers into the hole. WHOMP! The Whomping Willow sweeps Anna, into the air and -- FLOOMPH -- drops her on her backside.]
Sirius looks extremly guilty and sad.
ANNA'S POV - THE BRANCHES OVERHEAD
[Anna rises. Run back toward the gap in the tree. A branch swoops down. HOOSH -- Anna is flung one way, her glasses the other. She is looking for glasess just as -- WHOMP! -- the branch pulverizes the ground. FLUMPH! -- she's promptly knocked to the ground again. Anna spies her glasses and grabs them. Rising, she fits them to her face and turns just in time to see branch flying toward her.]
"Out! OUT!" Yelled Griffindors and Barty.
Anna: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! [-- riding the branch in tandem-- She boomerangs back, hurtling toward the trunk of the tree, through the gap, and into the darkness...]
WILLOW ROOTS - TUNNEL - NIGHT
[... below. OOMPH! Anna hits the ground hard.]
People are relieved she's okay, but they are still tense.
Anna: Lumos. [As the tip of Anna's wand glows, reveals a long, snaking tunnel.]
TUNNEL TO SHRIEKING SHACK
[Anna makes her way through the primitive passageway, ducking the roots that dangle overhead. Then, abruptly, the tunnel... ends. Confused, Anna glances about, then -- as one -- peer up. A small opening. Anna reaches up, hoists herself through.]
People are worried.
SHRIEKING SHACK - DECREPIT ROOM
[Paper peels from the walls. Stains -- suspiciously similar to dried blood -- blot the floorboards. Shattered furniture lies strewn everywhere. Anna is staring at the dog prints in the dust on the floor. The ceiling creaks. She dashes to the stairs.]
Everyone is nervous.
HALLWAY - LANDING
[They come out, look down. A wide, shiny stripe cuts through the dust-laden floor -- as if something has been dragged -- to the end of the hallway, where a light seeps from a door.]
Anna: Nox. [Her wand-light dies. Slowly, she steps to the door. She kicks the door aside.]
People are on edge.
