a night to remember by beabadoobee & laufey 🎧

Ever since the night of that party, you had grown quite accustomed to Niki's texts. Although the conversation always came to an end eventually, asking the other if they had heard of a certain song before always gave opportunity to continue where it left off. You found it quite funny how Niki, the lanky jock who spent most of his time perfecting his jump-shot, has become such a Laufey enthusiast. He particularly loved the song 'From The Start' as he found himself relating to it in a sense. But he left out that part as he texted you.

You had told him that beabadoobee and Laufey had been your top played artists recently so as he was leaving a study session with his friends, he couldn't hide his giddiness as he screenshot the new song and sent it to you. They looked at the boy, confused expressions painted on the six faces. He listened to it on the way to get food, while he sat in the crowded booth, and finally as he walked home. The sun had set ages ago, leaving the boy under the dark blanket of stars. The street lights that once shone bright, probably way before he was born, failed to assist in illuminating the night. He kicked at the small rocks that riddled the road as he made his way up the familiar path. Uneasiness that he kept at bay previously, filled him entirely as he caught sight of your house. He glanced at his phone for the 100000th time that night. No answer. He groaned in frustration. Niki wanted to see you. To see your reaction to the new song that he knew you would love.

God, how you hated midterms. Why was school even invented? Why couldn't you just be a baker and own a cute cafe that everyone goes to to study or to take cute pictures of the various confectioneries? Life is hard. As you glanced down at your chemistry book opened to Avocado's Law or whatever his name was, you felt your soul slowly being sucked in by the words of the book. Chemists must be zombies.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The zombie chemists are coming for me?!

You looked up from the textbook and at your window in horror. Maybe it's just the tree outside your window.

I DON'T HAVE A TREE OUTSIDE MY WINDOW?!

Tap. Tap.

"Y/n it's me", whispered a hushed voice. Oh. It's just Niki.

You quickly pulled back the black curtain, catching sight of the boy clad in a black hoodie and baggy jeans. His sleeves rolled up showing the multiple bracelets that wrapped around his wrist.

"Niki it's so late, aren't you cold? How did you even get up here?"

"Ah so you are alive."

Were zombie chemists taking over the world during the hours you spent studying?!

"What're you talking about?" you asked quietly, furrowing your brows in confusion.

'So cute.' Niki thought. He couldn't find it in him to be mad at you.

He waved his phone around gesturing towards it. You quickly moved to the side, letting him in as you grabbed your phone from the nightstand situated by your bed. "M'sorry I was busy studying I wasn't on-" Your own gasp interrupted your sentence as you saw the text. You covered your mouth and looked up at the boy, the one who was smiling like an idiot. "Omg Niki, we must listen to it now!" You were being louder than your usual tone, the excitement was quite evident in your voice. Niki loved your reaction, and he especially loved that he was mostly the cause of your excitement. You rushed to plug your phone into the speaker by your desk.

Niki looked around your room. It wasn't his first time seeing it. The day he walked you home from the convenience store, he was so paranoid that he made sure to walk you all the way up to your bedroom door. It matched you perfectly. It was minimal but still stylish. He admired the way everything was so neat. He glanced down at your textbook. "How long have you been studying for?" he asked as he walked over to your slouched figure. "Mmm the whole day basically. But I'm not done yet." You looked up at him. He was now right in front of you. "You need a break y/n." Niki noticed that when he was with you, he tried to be more soft-spoken. "Maybe like thirty minutes", you said as the song finally began to play. You walked towards the bed and sat on the edge. You rubbed your eyes and beckoned Niki to come. "You can lay with me if you want." Niki turned around quickly, his back facing you as he kneeled down to untie his shoes. He had never been more thankful to be wearing sneakers that took quite a while to unlace. It gave him time to recover from what he thought was the cutest sight he had ever seen. He put on his hood as he laid down beside your sleepy figure. Grabbing the thick black blanket by the foot of your bed, he gently wrapped it around you. "Wow I really like this song. I think it's one of my favorite songs now", you mumbled almost half asleep. Niki chuckled. "After just one listen, you decided that it's one of your favorite songs?"

"Mhm. Thank you Niki." Niki was glad your eyes were closed. God you didn't even know what you were doing to the poor boy.

"then i walked away, you asked me to stay"

"Niki", you called out to the boy quietly. You didn't know what time it was or how long you had fallen asleep for, but you felt the warm presence gone. Niki looked up from his shoes. He swore he didn't make any noise as he got up. He walked up to the bed, kneeling down to move your dark hair away from your face. "Y/n go back to sleep." It didn't feel the same though. It's as if the sleepiness was leaving your body along with the boy. But you wanted it to stay. You wanted him to stay. "Stay with me...please?"

"Of course."

You opened up the blanket, letting the boy join you underneath the warmth. There was space between the two of you. A space that he so badly wanted to fill. Staring at you, he felt his eyes growing heavy, until all he could feel was your warmth and the music playing lightly in the background.

"underneath the sheets, you enchanted me"
"i shivered beneath you, all wrapped up in embers"

"Goodnight Niki"
"Goodnight y/n"

"it was a night to remember"
