When we meet, my friend,

we will walk through the streets
of Rome and the crowd will push
us together, so we keep meeting
as if it has saved up our meetings
since we first imagined Rome.

When we meet, my friend,
we will go to the isle of Sappho
and talk about women and books
and remember that first time
when we had not met yet
but we talked about the same things.

When we meet, my friend,
I will know you as if we're not
meeting but we always were
because it's been too long but we
remember our steps that will sound
through the streets of Rome and how poetry
is about what is not said and if we turn
in the crowd, we will meet again.
