One week later, from the Pool
"Hey, you guys want to come over and have some ice cream? My mom went to Costco yesterday and got some," I say to the boys after a long day of playing ball in hot weather.
"oh uh, I can't. My mom wants me home before dark," Smalls says as he starts to walk home
"See you later," I say, and everyone else waves goodbye. "What about you guys?" I ask the rest
"Sorry but me and Tommy can't we have to go and clean the house because our grandma is visiting tomorrow," and they started walking home as well
"Do you guys have to go too?" I put a hand on my hip
"Yeah, yeah, I'm down for some ice cream," Yeah, yeah, he says, smiling, and then looks at Ham, asking him if he wants to come
"Well, duh, I'm going. you Squints?" Ham asks
"Can't sorry, I have to be home. Be 8, and mom wants me to wash the dishes."
"You, DeNunez?" Ham says, looking at him
"No, I can't. My dad needs help fixing the sink,"
"Ok, then whoever wants ice cream follow me," I say, walking out of the sandlot lot with Benny and most of the boys. Benny had his arm over my shoulder, pulled me closer to him, and kissed me on the side of my head
