Chapter 7

UMBRELLA ACADEMY-FLASHBACK
man on record: (O.S.) During extreme weather conditions, a climber must possess the wisdom to determine... (bell rings ) ...when evacuation is inevitable.
[Umbrella academy siblings come in room.]
"I hate flashbacks." Said Cora.
"True. They are always sad." Said Allison.
Man on record: (O.S.) A controlled alpine descent begins with the girding of one's lоіns and the anchoring of the climbing rope to one's enemy, the mountain. The Dülfersitz rappel is the preferred method for descent when rope is the only available tool, but must be regarded as a last resort. Begin by looping the rope... [Reginald comes into the room and sees siblings waiting for him standing next to their assigned chairs.]
Reginald: Sit.
Diego and Cora shared a look and rolled their eyes together at their father.
Man: A screen anchor must be used if the rope is to be successfully retrieved from the face of the mountain. Tightly knot the ends of the rope. Once anchored, thread the doubled rope through the legs, front to back, and around the buttocks. It is of utmost importance that the rope be drawn under the gluteal muscles, not through the crevice between the gluteus. Proceed by holding the rope diagonally... [Five stabs knife in table.]
Reginald: Number Five?
Five: I have a question.
"That's the day." Said Vanya.
Reginald: Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes. You are interrupting Herr Carlson. [Record continues playing. Five pushes his plate away.]
Five: I want to time travel.
Reginald: No.
"Listen to him, idiot!" Murmured Five. Cora looked at him sadly.
Five: But I'm ready. I've been practicing my spatial jumps, just like you said. (blinks next to Reginald) See?
Reginald: A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn.
Five: Well, I don't get it.
"If he was alive he would say 'I told you so.' " Said Five.
"Good thing he isn't then." Said Cora. Luther glared at her.
Reginald: Hence the reason you're not ready. [Vanya shakes her head. Five sees it, but still turns his head toward Reginald and speaks.]
Five: I'm not afraid.
Reginald: Fear isn't the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable. Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore. [Five rushes out of to the door.]
"No" Said Vanya.
"Don't do it" Said Cora. Five looks away from screen. Everyone looks gloom.
Reginald: Number Five! You haven't been excused! Come back here! [Five gets out of room. Cora stands up to follow.]
Reginald: Sit down!
Cora: But...
Reginald: Sit! [Cora looks at door, then sighs and sits.]
"I should have followed." Said Cora.
"You couldn't stop me. We both know i'm too stubborn for that." Said Five.
"That you are." Said Cora.
"Stubborn little shit." Said Diego.
STREET-FLASHBACK
[Five is walking angrily. Then he opens portal and time jumps.]
Five: (Scoffs) Not ready, my ass. [Five time jumps again and again. This time in apocalypse. There is destroyed building and fire.]
"What is this?" Said horrified Luther.
"Apocalypse." Answered Five.
[Five looks around scared. Then he runs to destroyed umbrella academy building.]
Five: Vanya! Cora! Ben! Dad! (Desperatly) Anyone!
Everyone look at him sadly. Five ignores looks and doesn't take his eyes off screen.
[Five tries to time jump again, but it doesn't work.]
Five: Come on! shit. [Five looks around desperatly and falls on his knees.]
CORA'S MANSION-PRESENT
Five: I survived on scraps. Canned food, cockroaches, anything I could find. [Cora looks horrified.]
Everyone does.
"You ate cockroaches?" Said Diego.
"You do what you have to do to survive." Glared Five.
"Are they tasty?" Asked Klaus. Five looked at Klaus with blank face.
"I'll take it as no." Said Klaus.
Five: (chuckles ) You know that rumor that Twinkies have an endless shelf life? Well, it's total bullshit.
Everyone looks sad for their brother.
Cora: I- i can't even imagine.
Five: You do whatever it takes to survive, or you die. So we adapted. Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it.
Cora: We?
Five: You got anything stronger? [Cora goes and comes back with bottle and two glasses. They drink together in silence.]
"You can't give him alcohol!" Said Allison.
"Hey! He asked." Said Cora.
"I'm an adult. I can drink." Rolled his eyes Five.
"But your body is still child's. It's bad for your health!" Said Allison. Five gave Allison a look.
"World is ending in nine days. I think i'll manage." Said Five.
Five: You think I'm crazy.
"Well... Dad said time travel affects mind and you still seam to be same age, so it's logical some might think..." said Vanya.
"That it was all in my head?" Said Five with angry look.
"Of course not. We saw it ourselves. She is just saying she would understand if Cora didn't believe." Said Allison.
"I think i would believe Five. Dad has always been talking about apocalypse. That was the reason he adopted us in first place." Said Cora.
Cora: It's just.. it's lot to take in.
Five: Exactly what don't you understand?
Cora: Why couldn't you time travel back? I understand you were exhausted at first, but then...
Five: (scoffs, sighs] Gee, wish I'd thought of that. Time travel is a crapshoot. I went into the ice and never acorn-ed. You think I didn't try everything to get back to my family?
Everyone looks devastated. Even Klaus can't seem to find in himself to make a joke.
[Cora drinks again.]
Cora: You said us.
Five: Dolores. My girlfriend. [Cora smiles slightly.]
"Girlfriend?" Said Diego with teasing tone. Everyone gave him same teasing smirks. Five rolled his eyes at them, but his lips twitched upwards.
Cora: You have a girlfriend?
Five: I-- I did.. for 30 years, but i couldn't bring her. She is probably somewhere in this time, too. [Five drinks.]
"Oooh. Sucks." Said Klaus. Five glared at him. Cora slapped Klaus's arm.
"Learn when to shut up, Klaus!" Said Cora.
"Ow." Said Klaus.
Cora: Was there no one else? Like at all? Animals, humans, birds, anything...
Five: There were some animals and birds, but not humans. Only me and Dolores.
"Can i hug you?" Asked Cora.
"No." Said Five. Cora gave him puppy eyes.
"That won't work." Said Five. Cora pouted.
"I will hug you" Said Klaus and hugged Cora. Cora hugged back.
Cora: You said you were there for 52 years, so where you all alone for 22 years? [Five looks away with pained, hunted eyes.]
The umbrella academy hated seeing this hunted look in their brother's eyes.
Five: Yes. [Cora can't stop herself and hugs Five. Five flinches, but Cora doesn't let go. Tears fall from her eyes.]
Five: Shhh... [Five awkwardly pattes her back.]
"You are so awkward." Said Cora. Five didn't answer.
Cora: You.. you were starved, all alone.. You were only thirteen.... (whispers) thirteen. [Cora starts sobbing for her brother, for his pain, for everything. Time to time Cora sobs out alone and starved, but she says nothing else. Five tries to calm her.]
"I should be the one comforting you, not the other way around. I'm so sorry." Said Cora. Five waved it away.
Five: This was mistake. [Cora lets him go and wipes her tears.]
Cora: No.. no... I.. i will stop. It's just... How did you? How did you survive more than half century there?
It seems to hit other siblings like a train. They knew Five was gone for long, but they didn't fully realise it until now.
Five: I wasn't always there. After around 47 years, i was recruited in commission.
Cora: (confused) Commision?
APOCALYPSE-FLASHBACK
[Old Five is pointing gun at woman, who raises her hand and waves to him.]
Handler: I work for an organization called the Commission. We are tasked with the preservation of the time continuum through manipulation and removals.
"Who is she?" Asked Diego, but got ignored.
Five: I don't understand.
Handler: Sometimes, people... make choices that alter time. Free will, don't get me started. When that happens, we dispatch one of our agents to... eliminate the threat.
"She wants to kill you?" Said angry Vanya. Hargreeves siblings glared at her.
"Not there." Said Five.
"What do you mean not there?!" Said Cora.
"You will see." Said Five.
Five: No, no, no, no.
Handler: You misunderstand me. You're not a target. You're a recruit. I've come to offer you a job, Number Five. We've had our eye on you for quite some time. And we think you have a lot of potential. Your survival skills have made you quite a celebrity back at headquarters. That and your ability to jump through time.
Five: You saying that I... I could actually leave here? Go... Go back?
Umbrella siblings heart broke again because of seeing Five like this.
Handler: In return for five years of service. Once your contract is done, you can retire to the time and place of your choosing with a pension plan to boot.
"Seems like a trap." Said Allison.
"It's too good to be true. There must be some trick." Agreed Cora.
Five: If you can alter time, why not just stop all of this from ever happening?
Handler: That's quite impossible, I'm afraid. You see... all of this, it was supposed to happen.
Five: That's insane. The end of everything?
Handler: Not everything. Just the end of... something.
"She is crazy! So world is suppose to end and that's it?!" Said Luther angrily.
Handler: So... do we have an agreement?
CORA'S MANSION- PRESENT-NIGHT
Five: They turned me into the perfect instrument for rehabilitation of the time continuum. Or "corrections," as they called them. I wasn't the only one. There are others like me. Beings out of time, fractured, extracted from the lives that they knew. I don't know how they got there. But I do know that none of them were as good as me. [Cora pours another glass for herself and Five.]
"I really need that drink right now." Said Cora.
"Tell me about it." Said Five.
FLASHBACK
Man: (O.S.) Dallas Love Field, the Dallas-Fort Worth area broadcasters bring you a special description of the arrival of President John F. Kennedy.
And the crowd yells, and the president of the United States... [Old Five looks through the book.]
Man: (O.S.) to get another view of the president as he and his First Lady depart Love Field. The presidential car moving out. The president and First Lady... head out for downtown Dallas, where thousands should already be on the street right now...
Five: (O.S.) They didn't realize it, but I was biding my time, trying to figure out the right equation so I could get back. If I could just get back, I knew I could stop the apocalypse. Save the world.
Man:(O.s) Dallas police out here in force today, doing a beautiful job of handling the crowd along with a contingent of Texas Rangers.
Five:(O.S) So I broke my contract. [Five uses his powers and opens portal.]
"And that's why they tried to kill you." Said Diego.
"Yes." Said Five.
CORA'S MANSION-PRESENT-NIGHT
Cora: And that's when you came back.
Five: And that's when i came back... But i messed up equations and now i'm stuck in a child's body. Dolores warned me it was wrong.. I should have listened. [Cora looks thoughful. Processing everything she heard.]
Cora: So they turned you into their weapon. Did you have some code or..
Five: No. No codes.
"What do you mean no code? What about the innocents?" Said Luther.
"Leave him alone, Luther!" Said Cora.
"That's murder!" Said Luther.
"So will be if i stab you, so shut it!" Said Cora. Five looked at her gratefully.
Five: (Sighs.) We aren't children anymore. There are no good guys and bad guys. There is just people.
"Got your answer?" Said Cora.
Cora: (sighs) You think i don't know? You did what you had to do. And you know what? I'm happy you did, because otherwise i wouldn't be able to see you again.
Luther gave disapproving look again, so did Allison.
"Murder isn't right." Said Luther.
"So it's right when daddy needs it, but it's not right when Five does?" Said Cora.
"Dad didn't kill inno--" said Luther.
"No, he didn't. He made Ben do it for him." Interrupted Diego. Cora pointed at Diego.
[Five smiled at her. Clearly touched by Cora's words. Cora gently touches Five's hand.]
Cora: You didn't deserve it, Five. No one does. You were just thirteen years old child and like a child you did what was forbidden. It wasn't your fault. You were just child and everything you did after that? It was surviving. It was not your fault.
Five: Thank you.
Cora: I didn't say that to comfort you, i really think that. [Five gives Cora one of his rarest smile.]
"Wow. Five is smilling? Is the world ending?" Said Klaus. Everyone looks at him.
"Oh, right. It is." Said Klaus. Cora chuckled.
Five: I know.
Cora: So... tell me about this apocalypse. How do we stop it?
Five: I have a lead. [Five shows Cora eyeball.]
"Eyeball?" Said confused people.
Cora: (confused) That's your lead?
Five: I found it in Luther's hand.
Cora: You mean...
Five: His corpse. You all died while fighting whatever it was.
APOCALYPSE–FLASHBACK
[Cora's dead body, Klaus's, Diego's, Luther's, Allison's...]
Everyone tears up at the images.
CORA'S MANSION-NIGHT
Cora: How long do we have?
Five: Nine days.
Cora: (yelling) Whaaat?!
"Whaat?!" Yelled everyone.
Five: It happens in April 1st. I meant to come back earlier, but commission caused issuies. [Cora closes her eyes and runs her hands through her hair.]
Cora: Please tell me, that eyeball isn't our only plan to stop the apocalypse! [Five remains silent.]
"We are officially fucked" said Diego.
Cora: Fuck.
