Chapter 12 - Embers of Dawn

-+-

In the quiet of the early morning, Lydia was abruptly awakened by a firm shake on her shoulder. Groggy and disoriented, she blinked open her eyes to find Diana looming over her, urgency painted across her face. Lydia sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, her mind racing to catch up with the situation.

"Lydia, something happened!" Diana exclaimed, her voice tinged with panic.

Confused and still half-asleep, Lydia managed to utter, "W-what happened?"

"The Gillis' home is on fire!" Diana's voice broke through the early morning silence like a clarion call. "We need all the help we can get!"

The gravity of Diana's words hit Lydia like a cold splash of water. She leaped out of bed, adrenaline coursing through her veins, and raced downstairs, Diana hot on her heels. In a flurry of motion, they donned their fall clothes, the urgency of the situation propelling them forward. Together, they dashed towards the Gillis home, hearts pounding and minds filled with concern.

As they neared the scene, the reality of the situation unfolded before Lydia's eyes. Flames engulfed the Gillis home, painting the night sky in shades of orange and red. Smoke billowed into the air, carried by the gentle breeze, a stark reminder of the destruction unfolding before them. Lydia scanned the crowd, searching for a familiar face amidst the chaos.

"Anne!" Lydia and Diana shouted in unison, their voices filled with relief as they spotted their friend. They rushed towards Anne, and the three girls embraced in a tight hug, a small island of comfort amid turmoil.

"Oh, I've missed you so much!" Anne's voice was muffled by the embrace, her words filled with a mixture of joy and sorrow.

Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass cut through the air as a window in the Gillis home succumbed to the heat. The girls turned towards the noise, witnessing the valiant efforts of the men as they positioned a ladder against the burning structure. A young boy bravely climbed, determined to battle the blaze.

Lydia's heart clenched as she watched the scene unfold, fear and concern etched into her features. "It's burning so fierce," Anne murmured, echoing Lydia's thoughts. "Is everyone out of the house?"

"Yeah. That's the Gillis family over there," Diana said, her gaze fixed on a group of figures huddled together in the distance. "You see Ruby?"

Lydia followed Diana's gaze, her eyes settling on Ruby Gillis and her family. They stood together, a tableau of despair against the backdrop of their burning home. The sight filled Lydia with a profound sense of helplessness, yet it also kindled a flame of determination within her.
