The Siren's Lullaby

Sonic

It was nighttime and so far, sailing had been smooth. There hadn't been many rough waves nor any enemy ships, so it was much less active on the ship.

I was down in the crew cabin where most of the crew slept, checking to make sure Tails was comfortable.
Shadow and Rouge had allowed me to stay in the extra cabin that was on the ship.
Apparently when Black had sailed the ship, he made a third room for Raven to sleep in when she was pregnant with her kids.

Now it collected dust until Shadow let me take it.

Tails and Kit had taken the empty bunk in the crew's quarters, and Tangle had taken a hammock.

I slid down the ladder to Tails's bed and landed on the floor.

"Goodnight, little brother." I said, softly.

"Night, Sonic." Tails chirped.

I grabbed the candle on a table and blew it out. I turned to leave but then I felt a tug on my sleeve.

"Uhm...Prince Sonic?"

I looked down to see Cream holding onto my white sleeve, as she was sitting up in her bed.

"I-I've been having trouble sleeping. I've been thinking about Mama and I'm scared. I know it's silly but...can you sing be a lullaby?" She asked, her big, soft brown eyes looking up at me.

"Yeah, lullaby! I may be a teen but I love when you and mom would sing them." Chirped Tails.

"I wouldn't mind a lullaby..." Mumbled Kit.

That's right, they were all still children, I could understand that they wanted the comfort of a song to put them to bed.

I still insisted when I was a teen that my mother sang me a small lullaby to sleep. It wasn't till I was 17 that I finally stopped asking, since I knew I could sing one myself.

But they all looked at me with almost begging eyes, like a puppy, guilt-tripping you into giving them food.

I sighed with a smile and chuckled lightly.

"Sure, I've got one for you three." I said, softly. I hoped it didn't bother the others in the quarters.

Big and Tangle were both sleeping in here, but the rest were up and working.

Cream let go of my sleeve and settled down into her bed as I sat down in a chair by the table.

I took a breath and began to sing.

I walked down below deck, leaving the ammunitions area where Midnight, Omega, and Honey were playing Solitaire.

Rouge was up on the top deck, chatting with Silver about how her and Knuckles wedding would be like when we rescued him.

I was bored of that since she had already told me a thousand times.
Sarah was just reading a book and Gadget was tinkering with a pocket watch.

Nothing much was happening so I was left to wander my ship.

I was passing by the crew's quarters when...I heard singing?

I stopped and stood by the doorway and quietly looked in.

It was dark but the moonlight through the porthole showed Sonic, kneeling by Cream's bed. He was running his fingers through her hair while he sang a soft melody.

"Into a land of enchantment..."

"Come little children, the time's come to play..."

"Here in my garden of shadows."

I leaned on the doorframe and listened to his soothing lullaby, his voice beckoning me to rest as well.

"Follow sweet children, I'll show thee the way..."

"Through all the pain and the sorrows..."

"Weep not poor children for life is this way, murdering beauty and passion."

"Hush now dear children, it must be this way, too weary of life and of deceptions."

"Rest now my children, for soon we'll away, into the calm and the quiet..."

His emerald green eyes shone in the moonlight as he looked upon Cream with a smile. He glanced at Tails and Kit who had both fallen asleep.

"Come little children, I'll take thee away."

"Into a land of enchantment."

Cream's eyes drooped and she closed her eyes, sinking into the sheets, peacefully letting sleep take her.

"Come little children, the time's come to play..."

"Here in my garden of shadows."

He finished and stood up, kissing Cream on the forehead as she softly slept.

He turned to the door, still looking back on the three children, an almost motherly smile on his face.
Then he bumped into me and looked up, his emerald green eyes locking in with mine. They slitted and his ears pinned back, however it was more in surprise than in defense.

"Captain! I-"

I placed a hand over his mouth and hushed him.

"Shh, you don't want to wake them up now, do you?" I whispered.

He sighed and removed my hand, his eyes returning back to normal.

"Thank you for putting her to sleep. Cream's been having problems sleeping ever since Mephiles took Vanilla, so this helps." I said in my hushed voice as we left the crew's quarters.

"You're welcome. She is quite the little sweetheart." He mumbled.

"You should see her with a dagger and pistol, she knows her way in a fight. Learned it from me." I chuckled lightly.

Sonic snorted and rolled his eyes, as we walked down the hall.

Then it was silent and it became extremely awkward between us.
I cleared my throat and glanced at him.

"Want to join me in the cabin for a glass of wine?" I asked.

He looked at me with those sharp emerald eyes and then back down at the floor.

"Sure, I've never had mobian wine before." He said.
