The Captain and The Siren

Shadow

I sat, my legs dangling off the side of the ship. I held my hat in hands, staring at it as the sun set in the sky.

I had let the one object I prized, the one gift from my deceased sister that I cherished, get shattered right before my eyes, and the culprit got away.

I let in a shaky breath and stared at the ocean.

I accepted her death a long time ago, I knew that, but I couldn't let go of her. She had been my everything. Maria led the group when I could not. She taught me patience and courage and kindness.
Now she was gone...and the emerald was one of the last things I had of her memory.

And I failed to protect that as well.

I wiped my tears but then I heard a soft melody behind me.

She's lovely and precious and never comes free...

I turned and saw Sonic. His eyes met mine, his hands folded behind his back.

"Lovely view isn't it, Captain?" He asked softly.

"Perhaps..." I mumbled.

He sat down next to me.

"How are you feeling?" He asked.

"I feel horrible...that was the last gift Maria ever gave me and now it's shattered. She meant so much to me Sonic, you'll probably never understand what that emerald meant to me." I whispered.

He sadly looked at me then smiled, his expression bittersweet.

"I may not understand, but I can try."

He then took my hands and enclosed something in them.

He removed his hands and my eyes widened.

The emerald...perfectly fine...no cracks...fully fixed...sat in my palms.

I looked at him, jaw dropped and my eyes wide.

He giggled softly.

"H-how?" I gasped.

"I may have a few tricks up my sleeve, Captain." He giggled.

I wiped my sudden happy tears, then hugged him tightly.

"Thank you." I whispered.

"You're welcome." He purred.

I pulled away then stared into his eyes. After minute or two, he looked away, his cheeks tinted pink.

I was reminded of the time we had in the caverns.

"Sonic...what you said...back in the caverns...what was all that about?" I asked softly, setting down the emerald.

"Uh, what do you mean?" He mumbled.

"Like, you planning on staying? And liking me more than friends?" I asked.

If he loved me...then...well, I didn't know how to react. Sonic and I had been through a lot together...I suppose he was attractive, and strong. He was an independent person and I could respect that, plus...he had saved me, and he had done crazy things for me that no one else would have.

He looked down at his clenched fists, his blush becoming a little more prominent.

"I don't know...I suppose we are friends by now...I can't deny it...but I have been...feeling something else towards you...some emotion I find hard to deny but I have no experience with it..." He mumbled.

"And that is?" I asked, taking his hand, our fingers intertwining.

"...Love, Captain." He said, his gaze meeting mine.
"I've never experienced...romance...most of the sirens who try to court me never gain my interest. I saw love as a simple emotion and thing. You have a connection with someone then you get married and the rest of it, but...getting to know you...and actually feeling something...makes it all the more confusing..."

"If it helps...I'm not very well experienced in what love is either..." I chuckled.

"But you understand what it is! You've probably felt it once or twice! I-I just...I think...it's all so confusing...and if I say it then...I'm afraid I won't mean it..."

"But what if you do?" I whispered, taking his other hand.

He bit his lip in nervousness.

"I-I don't know..." He whispered.

"How would you feel if I meant it?"

His eyes widened.
"Captain what...what do you mean by that?" He asked.

I took both his hands in mine and stared into his eyes and smiled.

"I mean, that I love you, Prince Sonic. I may not be what you want, but I love you." I said with a soft smile.

He stared at me with wide eyes and then looked down at our hands and blushed.

"Captain...I...I...."

He mumbled something under his breath, then quickly moved his hands, so he slipped them away from mine, then grabbed onto my jacket and pressed his lips against mine.

I was a bit taken aback for a moment but my senses came back to me and I kissed back. I gently cupped his cheek and wrapped my other arm around his waist.

Oh chaos, it felt amazing, his lips were soft and the way he felt in my arms...
We kissed for a couple of minutes before pulling away.

He stared into my eyes, I could see the passion and love in those perfect emerald eyes...
He glanced away.

"It's dangerous, falling in love with a mobian. Many sirens are shunned or looked down upon for falling in love with mobians instead of using them...but...I could care less right now..." He murmured.

"Oh, Sonic..." I purred, running my fingers through his quills.

"Captain, I love you..." He whispered, kissing me once more.

Sonic

What I was doing was dangerous, this was dangerous, but I couldn't stop myself from falling deeper in love with him.

He gently wrapped his arms around me while I wrapped my arms around his neck.

Oh sweet mother of Poseidon, the way he held me, the way his lips felt against mine...I love him so much.

We pulled away once more and stared into each other's eyes.

He smiled softly, and kissed my forehead.

"I love you so much, Sonic..." He said.

I smiled and nuzzled my forehead against his.
We let go of each other and sat on the deck.
He held onto the emerald once more and stood up.
He helped me up and we stared into each other's eyes.

"Thank you for fixing the emerald." He said.

"You're welcome...should we tell Gadget to start the engine back up?" I asked.

"Yeah, come on."

Third Person

The captain and the siren, grabbed hands and stared at each other lovingly while walking back to the infirmary.

Happiness doesn't last forever though.

And the two would find their new found love soon to be strained...and bad things were to come...
