"𝐌𝐑. 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑? 𝐉𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑?"

james looked up at the sound of his name, taking his car seat and following the doctor down the halls. in the car seat, his newborn son cayden slept peacefully, unaware of anything around him.

"okay, mr. miller," the doctor leafed through some reports, before finding what he was looking for.

james sat on the chair, placing the car seat near him. he peeked quickly under the cover, assuring himself that cayden was still asleep.

"so, the results of your son's tests came in, and i wanted to take a moment to discuss them with you," he told james. "don't worry- it's not really a cause for concern," he added at james' concerned look.

"then what is it?" james asked.

"we've just noticed some weird readings in his blood- it's not anything bad, but it is sometimes rare," the doctor said. "not many people have this, and we've noticed it may be genetic. it peaks in a single person and usually dies out eventually. we haven't read the abnormality in your blood, i just wanted to know if you're aware if his mother had this abnormality?"

"um, i don't actually know," james told the doctor. "but like, it's not bad, is it? will it affect his health or anything?"

"no, not at all," the doctor promised. "we've noticed some neuro disorders when someone is affected with this abnormality - like adhd or dyslexia - but there's no solid connection between the two. there's in no way any health problems. in fact, he may be healthier than average if the patterns are anything to go by."

james breathed a sigh of relief, "thank you doctor. so there's nothing else that can be a cause for concern, is there?"

"nothing at all," the doctor promised. "i just wanted you to be aware, in case of any medical emergencies later on."

james thanked the doctor, hoisting the car seat in his grip, before heading out.

well, he thought to himself, at least cayden's okay.

"thanks argus," cayden waved at the hundred eyed security guard.

of course argus didn't say anything else, but he waved back, making the little nine year old smile.

"cayden!" a familiar voice called out to him.

he turned, smiling at his dad making his way out of their house and down the driveway. cayden slipped out of his backpack, running towards his dad.

"one, two, three, jump!" cayden shouted, throwing himself at his dad.

james laughed, lifting him and pulling him into a hug. cayden rested his head in his shoulder, melting in his father's embrace.

"i missed you," james whispered.

"i missed you too dad," cayden smiled.

james put him down, walking down the driveway to life cayden's backpack and suitcase, before leading him inside the house.

the suburban neighbourhood they lived in was a great place for a single dad to raise a kid. surrounded by trusted neighbours who were willing to watch cayden whenever james was away for a military mission. it wasn't his first choice of job, but he was broke and he had a son to look after. he did whatever he needed to.

"so, are you gonna tell me everything you did at summer camp, or am i gonna have to tickle it out of you?" james asked, raising an eyebrow mischievously, closing the door behind them.

cayden giggled, shaking his head. "it was fun. we did so many things, and i even beat my si-uh... cabinmate in a rock climbing race."

"yeah?" james asked. "what about that friend of yours, how is she? annabelle? annabeth?"

"she's not my friend," cayden groaned. "she's my friend's friend. and she's doing good. she beat me in capture the flag though. it was still fun."

james smiled, setting down cayden's things as he talked about the fun things he did at camp. he noticed cayden pause at random times, before retracking and talking about something else. james would've asked, but he blamed it on cayden's adhd.

"movie night tonight?" james asked his son, holding out some cds.

"oh! yes!" cayden grinned, picking out one of the movies. "i'll get the popcorn!"

james smiled at his son's liveliness. he just hoped that if there was ever a day where he was no longer there, cayden would still stay like this. happy and carefree, and just a sweet soul.

that's all he ever wanted for his son.
