Chapter 5: Hot Dancin'

2 weeks later, it was January 16th as Abby was talking about where they would be heading for the next competition.

"This weekend, we will be traveling to Miami Beach, Florida!" Abby announced, setting off a wave of cheers from both the moms and the girls. "There's sun, sand, and pool boys."

"Somehow I knew you were gonna say that," Cosimo quipped, earning a laugh from Abby.

"We have a group dance featuring Mackenzie titled 'Reputation'. Think 'Beach Blanket Bingo' starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Cosmo, I know you've seen the movie plenty of times. Moms, before the girls head home tonight, make sure they watch those classics so they understand the vibe of the group dance," Abby instructed.

"Got it," Melissa affirmed.

"Maddie, you'll have a solo called 'All Of My Life', Chloe, yours is 'Send Down Your Love', and Nia, you've got 'Balia'. There's also a trio with Maddie, Chloe, and Paige called 'Les Divas'."

Maddie, Chloe, and Paige exchanged excited hugs at the news of their trio. Holly, however, couldn't hide her disappointment, hoping Nia might have been considered. Paige hesitantly raised her hand, catching Abby's attention.

"Yes, Paige?"

"I have to get my plantar warts removed tomorrow," Paige explained, her voice tinged with concern. "It's making it really hard for me to walk right now, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the trio."

"Paigey, you aren't the only one with plantar warts; I've got them too, and Mom's taking me to get mine removed tomorrow. My appointment's actually the day before yours," Cosimo chimed in, offering a supportive smile to Paige.

Paige looked relieved at the solidarity. "Miss Abby, if it's all right, can I come with you and Cosi tomorrow?" she asked tentatively.

"Of course, Paige. Cosi can go with you and Kelly when you get your plantar warts removed," Abby replied warmly, her tone reassuring.

Paige nodded gratefully, feeling reassured by the support of her dance mates and Abby's understanding. The upcoming trip to Miami Beach was exciting, but right now, taking care of their health was the top priority for both her and Cosimo.

"They said she'll need about three days to recover," Kelly added. "I've rescheduled that appointment 15 times already."

"We don't want Paige in pain while she's learning the routine," Abby acknowledged, looking thoughtful. "We may need to consider putting someone else in the trio."

Holly's face lit up with hope, anticipating Nia might get her chance if Paige couldn't perform.

"Your health comes first, Paige," Cosimo chimed in with a reassuring nod. "Moms, head upstairs. Girls, let's start warming up."

The moms retreated upstairs as the girls gathered to begin their warm-up routine, the excitement for the upcoming competition mixed with concern for Paige's well-being.

The next morning, Abby and Cosimo arrived at the podiatrist's office on Huehl Road & Harris Drive, accompanied by Paige. Cosimo was there to have his plantar warts removed, while Paige was scheduled for the procedure the following day. Dr. Connie Johnson, who knew Abby well, greeted them warmly.

"What seems to be troubling you today, Cosimo?" Dr. Johnson inquired as they settled in.

"I've got three warts on my feet. Found out about them a few days ago and told my mom. I dance at her studio," Cosimo explained, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

After a brief discussion and some comforting advice from Dr. Johnson, Cosimo was prepped for the procedure. Abby held his right hand tightly, offering support, while Paige took his other hand without hesitation. As Dr. Johnson skillfully used a laser to remove the warts, Cosimo squeezed their hands whenever he felt discomfort but remained resilient throughout.
