It was Monday, June 10th, and the Abby Lee Dance Company studio was buzzing with a mix of excitement and nerves. The dancers and their mothers filled the room, waiting for Abby to start the meeting. The pyramid had been revealed, and now it was time to discuss the week's plan.
Abby stood at the front of the room, her trademark fierce look softened slightly by the anticipation of the upcoming showcase. "Alright, everyone," she began, her voice authoritative but carrying a hint of excitement. "This week, we're staying put. No travel, no out-of-town competitions. You want to know why?"
She paused for dramatic effect, her eyes scanning the room. "This weekend is the annual Abby Lee Dance Company concert. That means it's going to be a grueling week with quick changes, back-to-back numbers, and a whole lot more. It's a different kind of pressure from what we face at competitions."
The dancers exchanged glances, the weight of Abby's words settling in.
Cosimo took over, his tone professional yet enthusiastic. "For assignments, everyone will be performing solos, most of which you've done before. The group dance for the showcase will be 'Sugar Babies.'" He glanced at Kendall, who was standing beside her mother, Jill. "Kendall will have a new solo called 'Strange Things.' It's important to stay focused and give it your all, understood?"
Kendall nodded, trying to hide her apprehension. Jill's face, however, was a picture of displeasure. Her eyes narrowed, and her lips pursed into a thin line. The thought of Kendall getting a new solo seemed to irritate her.
Before Jill could voice her frustrations, Abby cast a sharp glance in her direction, which immediately silenced her. Cosimo's eyes mirrored Abby's sternness, making it clear that any complaints would not be tolerated.
"In addition," Abby continued, shifting her gaze to Brooke, who looked both excited and nervous, "Brooke will be performing a live rendition of your song 'Summer Love Song.' And there's more—we've arranged a photoshoot with Dance Track magazine. This is the first time they've ever featured kids, and one of you will be chosen for the cover. Alright, you can spread out, and moms, you're free to head out."
As the rehearsal began, the chatter among the moms grew louder.
"I just need to make sure I'm not the only one feeling this way," Jill said, her voice filled with frustration. "Doesn't anyone else think it's unfair that Kendall's the only one getting a new solo?"
"No," Christi replied firmly, crossing her arms. "We've all seen how this works. Abby and Cosimo are pushing our kids to be better."
Melissa chimed in, trying to defuse the tension. "Jill, you've got to trust Abby, Gianna, and Cosimo to do their jobs. They know what they're doing."
"What Melissa said," Kelly added, nodding in agreement.
"I don't understand why Kendall's the one who has to get a new solo," Jill fumed. "It feels like they're setting her up for failure. And honestly, every time we come here, it feels like they've got something negative to say about Kendall."
"Abby and Cosimo are pushing your daughter to improve," Kristie said, trying to be the voice of reason. "It's not a personal attack. They know what they're doing, and it's about making the girls better."
Melissa shook her head. "To be honest, Jill, I think you're making this into a bigger deal than it needs to be. It's an opportunity for Kendall to shine."
Jill was not convinced. "A showcase is supposed to be about performing routines we've already mastered. Giving Kendall a new solo feels like a setup."
"We get it, Jill," Kelly said. "But there's no harm in learning a new dance, even if it's for a showcase. It could be a good experience for Kendall."
