As the afternoon sun bathed Abby's mansion in a warm glow, Cosimo lounged in his bedroom, absorbed in the sports highlights flickering across his TV screen. The Blackhawks' victory last night against the Flames was a sweet subject of interest, but his focus was soon interrupted by the familiar voice of his adoptive mother.
"Hey, Cosi," Abby greeted, her presence accompanied by Asia and Kristie, who had recently joined the Abby Lee Dance Company. Cosimo, clad in his favorite Adidas tracksuit and superstar sneakers, turned with a smile. "Hey, Asia, Kristie," he replied warmly, acknowledging their arrival.
Abby, always the organizer, laid out the plan for the day. "We're heading out to show Asia and Kristie around Northbrook. Thought it'd be nice for them to get familiar with the area since they're new here."
With a nod of agreement, Cosimo followed Abby, Kristie, and Asia out of the house and toward Abby's Escalade. Abby took the wheel, Cosimo settled into the front seat beside her, and Kristie and Asia found their places in the back. The engine roared to life, propelling them smoothly onto Shermer Road, where their journey was momentarily halted by a passing Metra train.
Curiosity piqued, Asia leaned forward, noticing the distinctive green-tinted windows of the commuter train. "What's Metra?" she asked, her interest palpable.
Cosimo, ever the informative guide, launched into an enthusiastic explanation. "Metra's our commuter rail system. The Milwaukee District North Line runs from downtown Chicago all the way up to Fox Lake. There are several other lines too—like the BNSF to Aurora, Union Pacific routes to places like Kenosha and Elburn, and the Metra Electric Line that goes south to University Park."
"Wow," Asia marveled as the train passed and the gates lifted, allowing Abby to resume their journey. Kristie chimed in, impressed by Cosimo's knowledge. "You really know your stuff!"
Abby beamed with maternal pride. "He's been fascinated by trains since he was little. We used to go to the Northbrook station just to watch them."
"And we still do and other times, we'd ride the train to downtown Chicago."
"He's right about that.
Cosimo continued, pointing out landmarks and local spots of interest as they drove. "Over there's Graeter's Ice Cream—Mom and I love getting sundaes there," he shared with a grin.
"Cosi's been a sundae aficionado since he was four," Abby added with a laugh, recalling fond memories.
Their tour continued seamlessly. Cosimo highlighted the subtle border between Northbrook and Deerfield, pointed out Northbrook Court—the local shopping mall—and enthusiastically recommended stores like Clark Street Sports, where they eventually made a quick stop.
"This is one of my favorite spots," Cosimo declared proudly, gesturing towards the store.
"He's a real sports fanatic," Abby teased good-naturedly.
As they explored the mall, Asia and Kristie soaked in the sights and sounds, clearly enjoying their introduction to Cosimo's world. They browsed stores, chatted about favorite foods, and shared laughs along the way.
After a leisurely afternoon, they returned to Abby's mansion, where Kristie and Asia departed for their own homes nearby. Abby and Cosimo settled back into the comfort of their home, the day's adventures leaving them with a sense of closeness and contentment.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the windows of Abby's mansion, it was clear that today's outing had not only acquainted Asia and Kristie with Northbrook but also deepened the bonds within their little family.
