#59 Forgive Me (Part Two)

James and his friends looked across the three books that were splayed out on the floor, so many notes about underwater creatures, instructions on how to create bizarre potions, but the thing that was grabbing James' attention the most was a random page about the seaside caves and the history on Salazar Slytherin.

James flipped through the pages and noticed words relating to a locket had been circled, as James continued flipping through, a glimpse of light caught his eye. James looked underneath Regulus' bedside table and there, attached to the bottom, was a locket that looked exactly like the one described as Salazar Slytherin's. James lifted the locket up and looked at Sirius who stared at it confused,

"Why does Regulus have that? I thought my mother locked that stupid necklace up with the rest of the heirlooms"

"This is yours?"

"Yeah, it's a Black family heirloom but I was told Regulus wouldn't inherit anything until he was 18 so I'm not sure why he has it"

James opened the locket and realised there was a letter inside, this locket was a Black heirloom so it couldn't have been the locket Salazar Slytherin had, unless...unless they'd been swapped. James quickly opened the letter and his eyes widened as he saw the cursive handwriting once more.

"To the Dark Lord,
I know I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in the hope that when you do meet your match, you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B"

James hadn't realized that everyone had been looking over his shoulder while he read, they all looked amongst each other in shock, fear for their friend.

"So Regulus studied the concept of a horcrux and learnt if he could destroy them, it would make Voldemort mortal." Lily had her head in her hands, trying to wrap them around what she was learning.

"And with that information he's successfully located a horcrux and is going to destroy it himself" Evan added in a very similar tone.

James took a deep breath, "ok this is what we're going to do. Lily and Mary, Remus and Pete are going to go to the library and find everything they can on the history of Salazar Slytherin's locket and why Regulus had it as well as any information on horcruxes"

James' friends got up and did as they were told, James tossing them the invisibility cloak before they left so they could get into the restricted section.

"Barty, Evan, Dorcas and Pandora I want you guys to go through any of Regulus' belongings that you think could lead to his whereabouts, any leads about his location or places he might hide things"

The four stood up and began checking the room, eventually heading out to places they knew Regulus frequently visited. Sirius gave Pandora the map so they could find everyone when they were finished.

That left James and Sirius standing in the room by themselves, James nodded at Sirius who wiped the last tear away "you ready?"

"Where are we going?"

"Seaside caves, I think there might be a clue there"

Sirius and James apparated to the seaside caves, standing on a large ledge rock as they looked into the cave beneath the cliff. Sirius watched the whirling waves crash violently against the stone and James stared into the dark abyss entrance.

"You can turn back" James looked at Sirius with a sincere expression, he wouldn't blame him, the readings showed there was nothing good awaiting them.

"No way, we're in this together. Plus I want to be the one who kills the little bastard after all this when we do find him" Sirius grinned at James through the fear that was building up inside him.
