I brought the letter to brunch on a Saturday morning with Cameron. We were determined to read it together once and for all, behind the scenic backdrop of lush greenery and a gentle, turquoise bond as we dined on a five-star patio. I felt like I was in a movie. I punctured through the envelope with my acrylic nail to unveil a beige piece of paper and Cameron only gave me a grumpy expression.
Dear Miss Alexa,
I was wrong.
That's all I could see. The rest was completely and utterly tarnished. The words were smudged. Part of me felt a pang of sadness but I also burst into laughter.
"What?!" Cameron furrows his brows from across the table as I giggle uncontrollably.
I pass him the piece of paper between my two fingers, "It looks like little Cooper spilled something on this when it was left at the bottom of his backpack all those months. I'm so sorry."
"I was wrong?! That's all that was left behind?" Cameron feigns frustration as his cheeks turn red from laughter. "What sort of deal do you have with the devil, little miss?'
"Well, you were wrong."
Cameron's eyes turn gloomy, "I know. But just like I said to you the other night, we're getting back to normal. Aren't we?"
"We are," I reach for his hand and squeeze it. "Maybe you'll just have to write me a new one."
He nods, "I've never been much of a writer. But you are something else entirely. I don't think there's a single thing I wouldn't do for you."
I take a deep breath, "Not a single thing?"
"Well, I won't listen to Sabrina Carpenter or Chappell Roan on my own accord, Alexa."
I giggle, "That's not what I meant-"
"And I still won't let you drive my Lexus so don't even think asking again"
"Sir, I'm not-"
"And if we have this conversation, you're just going to use what I say as a way to test my limits. We both know it."
I smile weakly, "I promise that isn't what this is about."
Cameron straightened his spine, "Oh. Then?"
"I want to go visit your parents. And settle this once and for all."
He lets out a low grumble, pinching the bridge of his nose, "I said no."
"If you don't, I will."
"Don't you dare."
But of course, I did dare. I drove to Laughing Hills all by myself the following Saturday after coordinating with Cynthia. There I was. Parked in their driveway in my white SUV and I dialed Cameron's number.
"Hey, sweetheart, I'm just teeing off. Can I call you back?"
"Cameron, I'm at your parents' house. I'm settling this."
"What did I say?!"
"I'm making things right. Your Mom agreed to talk this out with me."
He was silent, all I could hear was his breathing and the sounds of golf balls puncturing through the air along with men's laughter.
I carried the sinking feeling in my stomach all the way up the grand steps to Cameron's childhood home. I picked up the copper door-knocker and rapped on it a few times in a friendly rhythm.
Woof!
The pattering of Thornton's nails and the jingle of his collar as he hustled to the door made me feel less like a cat on a hot tin roof.
