NATAHLIE STEPPED OUT OF HER APARTMENT.
She walked across the courtyard towards the parking lot, pausing when she heard her name being called out from behind her. Nathalie turned around, seeing a smiling Miguel running across the courtyard to catch up with her.
"Hey, Nathalie," Miguel greeted her with a smile. "I was wondering if you'd be able to give me a ride to school today. My mom had to go into work early, and my Yaya is sick, so she can't take me. I tried knocking on Sensei's door, but he didn't answer."
Nathalie sighed. "I'll take you."
Miguel flashed a toothy grin. "Thanks!"
Nathalie turned on her heels and continued to walk to her car. Miguel followed behind her. When they reached the car, Nathalie unlocked it and got inside without saying a word to Miguel. He opened the passenger-side door and sat down in the seat. Nathalie started the car and pulled out of the parking lot before Miguel even had the chance to put his seatbelt on.
"Hey, so, I was wondering how karate was going for you," Miguel asked when they stopped at a red light. "Sebastian and Oliver were telling me at practice the other day about how against it you were."
Nathalie sighed. "I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually enjoying it. My sister Marisol says that my anger finally has an outlet."
"Why'd you decide to join anyway?" Miguel questioned. "I mean, you seemed so against the idea of me doing karate with Sensei because you said he's a washed up drunk. But now you joined Cobra Kai?"
"I joined for my brother," Nathalie told him. "After Johnny gave him and Oli a flyer at the skatepark, they've spent months trying to convince Flora and me to join. My sister actually told me that if I hated it, I didn't have to go back."
"I'm guessing you didn't hate it," Miguel said, followed by a chuckle. "Considering you keep coming to all the practices."
Nathalie shrugged. "It's really not as bad as I thought it would be. The only downside is Johnny. Seriously, how do you put up with him?"
"I don't know," Miguel responded. "I guess I'm just used to it now."
"I've been living next door to him since I was eleven, and I'm still not used to it," Nathalie replied.
Miguel laughed. "Maybe it's just because you don't take shit from anyone, including Sensei. You're tough, Nat."
Nathalie slowly inhaled a breath. She might have acted tough and didn't let anyone bring her down, but she didn't feel tough.
Nathalie ignored the statement, and decided to question the nickname instead. "Nat, huh? Is that what you're calling me now?"
"I—I mean...I—I don't know," Miguel stammered. "I can only call you Nathalie if that's what you prefer. I mean, I can call you Nattie, but I think that's reserved for your friends and family. So I—"
