The Scout
chapter 49
'Sadie'
Written by: Mike Hurley

A thunderstorm roared across the valley. Big raindrops pelted the Ranch House Roof.

Ty was deep in a daydream as he walked with Shawn in deep darkness......

...........Ty lay on his back in Amy's bed.
They were in her bedroom at Heartland Ranch.  The war was over and Ty fulfilled his promise to Amy.....he got her home safely to her family in Alberta.  It had been a grueling experience for both of them.
But the more hardships they faced, the closer they grew as a couple.

Ty wondered when he should broach the subject of children.  Amy said once they arrived home, she would give him a child.  But every time he brought up the subject, Ty could see stress flood into Amy's eyes.  One minute he decided to drop the whole thing.  Marrying the most beautiful girl in the world should be enough for him.

But seconds later he'd see a toddler with her father.  Or a dad playing catch with his 8-year-old son.
Being a father was in Ty's DNA, he needed to love, guide, and be there for all the joys and tough times of parenthood.  It was something he and Amy could do together.  Then they'd enjoy grandchildren.  But how could Ty ask Amy for something that stressed her out beyond comprehension?  Just the thought of delivering a baby freaked her out.
Much less diapers, 2 am feedings, and eons of constant crying.

Ty could take on 10 Rebels and win, but talking to Amy about a baby scared him.  Plus he'd die seeing her in the throes of childbirth.  Her pain in delivering his child was something he couldn't imagine.
Ty's heart was racing as he imagined Amy screaming and exhausted as the nurse yelled.......PUSH!!
Ty wanted to vomit just thinking about Amy in intense pain.......so he could be a father.  The word PUSH freaked him out.

Ty was in a daydream, his mind and heart numb to this world and the evils of war.  All Ty wanted out of this life was a peaceful existence, in which he could love his woman, hold her, and when she was sad.......tell her everything was going to be ok.
He was a man, and protecting his woman was a man's job.

Ty would make damn sure everything was ok for Amy.
But that meant he would never know the unexplainable male desire to
Impregnate her.......to prove he was a man.

Ty walked with Shawn in the dark, on a lonely trail through the Rocky Mountain foothills of Wyoming.
A steady rain fell on them, but neither felt it.  A cold wind battered their hearts, but what did it matter; both were sick with loneliness.  Missing young women; one a wife, the other an estranged girlfriend, full of teen emotions and a temper she fought to control.

Ty jumped into the brush and quietly called out to Shawn to drop out of sight. They held their breath as a Rebel drone whizzed by, just above the tree top.  It was a model
M437-B with night vision live feed to an operator in a Rebel camp where beating women and getting them pregnant was almost a sport, with scorecards to record every detail.

"Bastards"!!  Ty mumbled under his breath.  He clenched his fists and wanted to strangle a Rebel then rescue all the women, children, and babies right out the front gate.

Ty wondered exactly how real Robin's angels were.  Shawn called them mysterious hallucinations of delusional people.......MHDs for short.
But Ty had sensed them many times on his rescues.
Mysterious things suddenly happened, like escorting a woman and holding her crying baby right out the front gate of a Rebel camp crawling with guards.

And once on a nighttime drop, a missile ignited his parachute at 12,500 feet.  He released it, then pulled the handle of his reserve chute.  But it didn't deploy.  He free-fell 5000 feet, and his life flashed before his eyes.
