Jessie POV
As soon as I set a solitary footstep into the void, the crushing, powerful darkness of the void engulfed me completely, threatening to smash me to pieces. I panicked, my heart pounding, my mental form flailing, my thoughts racing, "How do I escape this crazy mess? Is the darkness going to swallow me and kill me or something? What do I do now? What if I never pull myself free? What if I never manage to come back from this black trap?"
But then I remembered Leon's words.
He finally told me, "You know, Jessie, it's fine if we're not okay sometimes. But what's most important is that we learn to move on and build on ourselves to become better people, better at what we do."
"You're great, Jessie. I knew that the moment I saw you in the midst of the woods, and all the time I've spent learning with you has only proved that to be more and more true as time passes."
"You really think so?" I grinned, sniffling as I stared into his eyes.
He nodded, giving me a bright smile as he offered me a hand.
Partially stunned, I shakily took his hand, and he pulled me up and whispered in my ear, "You can do it, Jessie. I trust in you."
I trusted him too-I loved him more than anything else. And I trusted myself too.]
So I charged headfirst into the void, not even blinking when the suffocating black wrapped around my throat and was ready to push all the air out of me with one single strong squeeze.
Instead, I willed my mental power to give me something. And that was exactly what it gave me.
My concentration morphed into a blinding thread of golden light which glowed brightly in front of me, wiggling as if it wanted me to follow me.
A month ago, I would think that this was all a dream.
But I had powers now. I could create purple explosions. I could teleport. I could create living blue lightning beings that could track people. I could invade people's minds.
This all came down to trust. So I swam through the ocean of black, following the shiny beacon that I had created-a beautiful thread of light.
It led me through the dark void of oblivion, until we finally reached a place where things looked different. All beside and around me was black. But the ceiling-or whatever the thing above me was-glowed with a faint blue, only illuminated by the thread of light. And it seemed to want to go up, so I channelled my energy and hurled a purple sphere of energy against it.
The barrier cracked and crumbled to pieces, and the darkness was replaced with normal colours. But this time, a powerful wind threatened to blast me back into the darkness, and I held on desperately to the thread of light I had created.
But the push was too strong. So I decided to try something else.
Creating another black portal in front of me, I skipped and sped through hundreds of portals barely a centimetre in front of each other, until I finally reached a large red curtain.
I braced for another attack from Alan's mental defences. But this time, my thread of light curled into the red curtain, emitted a bright flash and before I knew it, the curtains tumbled away to reveal...
"A medic's tent?" I murmured in confusion.
