"Morning T. Sleep well?" I turn my attention from my plate towards Gally's voice as he sits next to me on the grass.
"Well, I didnt fall out of my hammock for once, so thats a pretty well sleep." I sat and he lets out a muffled laugh, biting into his egg wrap. "Youre the only one out of everyone here who sleeps like a goat." he jokes, smiling down at me.
"Maybe all girls do. Who knows." I bite into my nearly burnt eggs.
"Hey so, where's Chuck anyway?" he asks and pinches at my curiosity."Oh thats right, why isnt he here? He was supossed to come down a while ago." I say, looking around.
"Hes literally always the first one here." Gally says with a low laugh that fades when I get up, "Where you going."
"To find Chuck, obviously. I worry you know."
"Yeah, I know. You want Frypan to save the rest of that?" he asks pointing at my leftover food.
"Nah, it will go bad before lunch anyway. You eat it, if you want I guess, I dont know." I say faintly and jogg away before he could say something else. Me and Gally had grown pretty close a few months after my arrival. He was literally my closest friend, though of course we all had to tell Newt and Alby everything. It did take a while before he was okay with me though, he was the first to accuse me of the whole "Shes the last one." dilemma.I jogg towards the area where me and Chuck sleep on our hammocks to find any sign of him. Since I arrived, me and Chuck stuck together, Newt mainly putting me in charge of him because apparently a girl and a young boy watching out for eachother was ideal. It made sense. If I was much older, I would even be his mother. I already acted like one anyway. Those small thoughts brought faint memories of what a mother would be like. I would normally shake them off or I would have strange nightmare attacks in the middle of the night.
I arrive at our hammocks and lift the curtains, relief washing over me at the sight of Chuck in his small cacoon. I silently battle with myself whether to wake him or to let him sleep in his peaceful state. The first choice would probably make me feel horrible.
I tiptoe closer slowly, just close enough to hear his faint, silent snores and see his slow eyelid movement. I just couldnt bring myself to wake him. It was a bit late at day now but he was just a kid. So in the end, I just decided to leave him to his heavenly peace.
I slowly walk out and lower the curtain behind me. He was truly a sweet kid. He got annoying at times, though it was often entertaining. The morning cool breeze send a chill down my spine causing me to shiver a bit. I stood there for a while, looking out to the Glade. It was huge. Not to mention the walls. Enourmous. Monstrous, maybe even.
I take in a deep breath of minty pine tree air before I walk off only to have it knocked out of me and into the blue.
"Whoa! Hey! Watch your step, darling." I look up to see Minho smiling down at my small nearly tripping episode. "Hey, sorry Minho." I say with a nervous laugh and let go of his arms.
"Where is your head at lately." he asks, half-smiling down at me.
"I dont even know anymore. If I had a choice though, we wouldnt even be here." I laugh and he joins."Youre a smart girl."
"Arent you supossed to be running today too?" I asks, noticing the absence of his runner's harness pack."Yeah but Alby let the other runners take over, I'm helping set up the bonfire for tonight."
"Ahh. Sounds good. I was just checking on Chuck, he didnt go down for breakfast as early as he usually does, I just made sure he was okay." I tell him, pointing over my shoulder.
"Shank kid needs all the sleep he can get. I'm lucky if I get enough at all." Minho tell me shrugging.
"What do you mean." I ask.
"Its just, Ive been having a few bad dreams lately, sometimes none at all but I just cant fall asleep as easily."I furrow my brows together and press my lips to a fine line. "You know, Ive been having the same problems lately. Of course I dont get up as early as you do usually though."
He nodds and smiles widely. "I'll trade you jobs anyday, sweetheart."
"Ahh and make me a runner? I bet I would kill it out there." I laugh, leaning my arm on the tree and placing the other on my hip.
"If you dont mean killing a griever, the fine by me." he laughs before continuing, "Not a chance. I wouldnt risk losing you out there for a second." he finishes and I smile shaking my head softly as I glance over to the doors leading to the maze. In that moment, I catch the last glimpse of the doors opening and the runners jogging out.
"There they go." I state and Minho glances over his shoulder then back to me.
"I prepped them this morning so they're more than good to go." he says, looking down to me.
I nod and dont respond, simply maintaining eye contact. Minho was truly a handsome guy. Tall. Fit. Something amazing. He was truly a great guy and not to mention,a great friend.
"Minho!" We jump slightly and my head turns towards the sound of Newt's voice calling out.
"Shuck, I was supossed to be there a while ago. I'll see you at the bonfire, those shanks are gonna keep me busy pretty much all day." Minho states and I nod."I gotta go find Clint and Jeff anyway, I'll see you tonight." I smile and he steps forward, wrapping his arms around me as I do the same. In a slight moment I breathe his soft scent of minty oak and... sweet dirt. The hug lasts a small while, though it probably lasted longer than it felt. He lets go and flashes a small smile before jogging off now that Newt continued calling his name. I fold my arms and watch him jogg away before turning to have another breath knocked out of me.
"Geez Chuck, could you warn me you were nearby? Seems like everyone is trying to give me heart problems lately." I laugh nervously and he simply stands there, smiling.
"Are you feeling okay?" I ask him.
"He totally likes you."
"What?"
"Dont act like you dont see that." he laughs."Alright we've been over this. Im not speaking of it with you again. Understood?" I attempt my most mature demand and he refrains from bursting out laughing. "Now seriously, why did you sleep so late!" I ask and he shrugs.
"I woke up for a while and my head was hurting so I went back to sleep. I feel better though." he tells me.
"Alright" I step forward and place the back of my hand on his forehead and he sighs, pulling it away as I laugh slightly, "I was worried so I came to check on you during breakfast."
"I'm a man now. I do what I want." he says and I hear the jokingly sarcasm behind his voice.
"Alright little man, go get food and get to work, we have work today. The fire tonight has to be amazing."
