Feeling a sudden bust of pain in my side I made my eyes shoot open in panic. I was confronted by a wooden beamed ceiling with a large window left ajar near me, a cool summer breeze coming into the room. Peering out, I could see it was dawn, the warm yellow sun only just above the rooftops of Bree. The sound of the birds seemed to always soothe me and I relaxed my body, with the feeling of the pain disappearing contributed to being relaxed as well. I turned my head to the right and saw Fili's dusty blond hair and beard across the room. He was sat on a bed leaning against the wall with his eyes closed. He was obviously watching over me as I slept and fell asleep himself. I wanted to go over and hug him so bad. I eased myself up onto my elbows and looked down at my shirt, half of which was rolled up into my chest, revealing my sewn up wound on my side. I was laid on a bed similar to the one Fili rested on: soft fur blankets and plump pillows. I grunted as I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and sat up straight, breathing long and deep breaths to calm myself down. My eyes were down on my knees as I steadied my spinning head, but when I looked up again, Fili was looking at me with a smile slapped across his face. I lowered my eyes again, slowly got off the bed and straightened myself as I stood up. "You alright there, Kili?" Fili asked, not moving from his seated position against the wall.

"I'm fine. It's nothing" I replied, smoothing my long dark hair back from my face.

"It's not nothing" Fili said, rising from his bed. "I was worried" He continued. "You could have died"

I looked around the strange room we were in: a bedroom with two single beds on either side of the room, a door at the top-end of my bed and a staircase at the foot of Fili's bed, half of it accessing to the level above and the other half of it descending down to street level. On the wooden floor was a single fur rug and all of our things, spread out across it like a tidy mess. "Where are we?" I asked, smoothing my hair back from my face.

"In a house belonging to Anna's husband" I heard Fili sigh, noting I wasn't talking about what happened. "I'll tell him you're awake" He made for the door.

I grabbed his arm and looked him dead in the eye. "No" I said, casting my eyes down. "We need to get back on the road" I painfully kneeled down to get my things and placed them on my bed, identifying every item of clothing and weaponry.

Fili was still stood at the door as a female voice was heard singing outside. He moved to my side as we both looked out the window to see a woman Dwarf coming down the street and towards the house. "She's back" Fili said with a smile, then approached the staircase and stood at the top as the woman continued to sing and ascended the stairs to this floor.

"Good morning, Fili" She said. "How is he?"

I paused momentarily, then silence filled the room, making me uncomfortable. I raised my head in the direction of the stairs and saw Fili standing with the woman, long dark hair flowing down her chest like a waterfall and eyes glowing a shade of green I hadn't seen in a long time. I recognized her to be Anna.

She appeared pleased as she looked at me, her eyes scanning my body up and down. "It looks as if you are healed well, Kili" Anna said as Fili left to room through the door near my bed, carrying the basket of fruits Anna had brought.

"I fine" I replied, keeping my eyes down at my things. "How have you been? I heard you have a husband" I asked, changing the subject.

"I have been well" She answered, walking over to my bed and sitting on it. "And yes, I do have a husband" She beamed.

"A handsome and wealthy man" I indicated the room we were in, taking in its luxurious contents, my eyes falling upon Anna.

She frowned. "Do you really think I would marry a man?" She asked, her eyes turning a darker shade as she thought of men. "No, I married a handsome and wealthy Dwarf of whom my parents thought fondly" She rested her chin on her hand on my shoulder.

"Easy" I whispered. "If you're married, you cannot be doing things like that to me. It would make your husband very jealous" My voice was quiet enough so only Anna could hear me as I leaned my face dangerously close to hers, teasing, then I pulled away with a grin.

"What?" Anna asked, noting my expression.

"You haven't changed at all" I beamed as I pulled on my jacket and shoes. "So where is dear husband now then?" I asked.

"I assume preparing breakfast. Would you like some?" Anna questioned while walking to the door.

I furrowed my eyebrows as I searched the bed covers for my quiver of arrows. I crouched and looked under the bed, then on the floor and under the rug. Realization hitting me like a rock to the face, I stopped and got to my feet as I turned to face Anna, my quiver of arrows in her hand as she leaned against door frame. "Give it back" I said with a sigh.

"No" She replied playfully.

I cocked my head to the side. "Give it back" I repeated in a childish tone, sheathing my sword and putting my bag on my back.

"No" Anna replied again, in the same tone.

I took some steps closer to her, just a small pocket of air between us, and gazed down into her eyes. "Give it back" I whispered.

She gasped quietly as she felt a light pressure applied to her stomach. She hesitated, then looked down to see a knife being held to her stomach, my hand wrapped around the handle. As she dropped the quiver, she took a step away from me, holding her stomach and appearing distressed.

I furrowed my eyes. "What's wrong? I did nothing" I said, hiding the knife in  my jacket.

Anna shook her head and raised her eyes to look at me, dead in the eye, still holding her stomach.

The penny dropped and my eyes widened in surprise, a mixture of emotions compelling me to lose my balance a little. "You're...." I began.

Anna nodded her head, tears of joy filling her eyes. "I almost forgot to tell you" She smiled. "But don't tell my husband" She said, moving to stand closer to me again. "I don't want him to know just yet" She whispered, then backed away again and walked out of the room, leaving me with my blurry thoughts in the middle of the spinning room. I took a step and found I was following her out of the room with my quiver of arrows hanging loosely in my fingers.
