As night fell on the eve of Durin's Day, Thorin and half of the company waited outside the city armoury while the rest of us built steps with ourselves to climb in through the window of one of the easiest places to break into. I was one of the first inside and the Dwarves who followed after me kept handing me their desired weapons, so I could take them downstairs for them. They kept making me jump every time one of the rolled through the window. Nori, the Bilbo, then Thorin came in and I continued taking the weapons and carrying them down the stairs. "Are you alright?" Thorin asked me as he handed me a sword.
I nodded. "I can manage" I replied, but I lied. The pain in my leg was almost unbearable, but as one of my uncle's best fighters, I had to remain as tough as Dwalin, but it was getting tougher. "Lets just get out of here" I said to Thorin as I carefully stepped down the top of the staircase. But I lost my footing and must have cried out, dropping the weapons I was holding and falling down some of the stairs. The horrid sound echoed and must have disturbed most of the town. Faint yells not too far away were heard by me and the rest of the boys and before long, I had a soldier pinning me to a beam with a dagger to my throat. I looked up at Thorin, expecting him to be angry with me, but he looked more worried than angry, glancing fro my injured leg, to the soldier in front of him, back to my face. I sighed, disappointed with myself.
Everyone was caught, all of us, including Anna. She should have been resting, but she was hassled through the tow with the rest of us and was forced to stand before some huge double doors, which swiftly opened and a tall man dressed in regal robes stepped out with a smaller, uglier man in black. "What is the meaning of this?!" He yelled, coming to stand at the top of the stairs.
"We caught them stealing weapons, sir" The captain told the fat man.
"Ah, enemies of the state, eh?" The Master replied, narrowing his eyes at us, but letting them linger on Anna, who leaned on Dori slightly. She still looked weak, but was able to stand almost upright and glared up to the men.
"A bunch of mercenaries if ever there was, sire" The ugly little man said, his one eyebrow sticking out like he was a goblin.
"Hold your tongue!" Dwalin exclaimed and stepped forward. "You do not know to whom you speak! This is no common criminal, this is Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror!" He yelled, holding out his arm to indicate the heir to the Dwarvish throne.
As he stepped past Balin and Bilbo, Thorin placed his hand briefly on Dwalin's shoulder to calm him, and also to silence him, then all attention turned back to the master, who looked shocked to see another king in his lands. "We are the Dwarves of Erebor" He spoke confidently and without fault, causing the gathered townspeople to murmur. "We have come to reclaim our homeland" Thorin stepped forward, right into the middle of the semi circle formed by the rest of us and addressed the rest of the townsfolk. "I remember this town in the great days of old" He said. "Fleets of boats in the harbours filled with silks and fine gems. It was was not a forsaken town on a lake, this was the centre of all trade in the north!" The people stirred again. "I would see those days returned. I would reignite the forges and send wealth and riches flowing once more from the halls of Erebor!" Thorin used his hands to speak skilfully as his thunderous voice echoed against the wooden houses in the square.
"Death!" The voice of Bard called from behind the crowds. "Is what you will bring upon us" He continued as he barged past the guards and Balin and Bilbo, who looked horrified. "Dragon fire and ruin. If you awaken that beast, it will destroy us all"
"You can listen to this Naysayer, but I promise you this:" Thorin took a step closer to Bard, who sized him up with a regretful look. "If we succeed, all will share in the wealth of the mountain. You will have enough gold to rebuild Esgaroth ten times over!" Thorin yelled, looking excited, but still composed.
I noticed Balin nodding his head as he watched my uncle perform his proposals, but his face fell when Bard began talking again. "All of you! Listen to me! You must listen! Have you forgotten what happened to Dale?" He asked the people, standing in front of Thorin, as if to hide him. "Have you forgotten those ho dies in the fire-storm?! And for what purpose?" He asked, half turning to glare at Thorin, who lowered his head. "For the blind ambition of a mountain king, so driven by greed that he cannot see beyond his own desire!" He stepped forward and addressed Thorin, both of them talking so nobody else would hear them, then Thorin faced the master, at which point I caught onto Anna's gaze and read her lips. I nodded my response, then asked the same question to here, at which point she nodded as well. Then I noticed her son wasn't with her.
"Welcome! Welcome! Welcome, King Under The Mountain!" The Master yelled, bringing my attention back to him as he stood at the top of the stairs with his arms outstretched while the rest of the townsfolk erupted in grateful cheers and I felt myself fall into a dilemma, what did Thorin say that was so important that it captivated a man?
