Maxwell took a sip of his tea.
"You know I'm the alpha of this pick, the blue shades pack, but what you don't know is that I don't have complete control of the pack. Half of our wolves pledged their loyalty to James, decades ago."
Maximus stared at his father in confusion.
“You must have heard the story of our pack almost going extinct, Madam Felicia, James and I, stepping up and conquering almost all the packs in Europe.. right?” He asked.
Maximus nodded.
His father sighed again.
"During that period, James was.. I don’t know how to put it, he was seen as one of the greatest warriors ever seen, and many of the other wolves wanted him as our pack's alpha instead of me," He said, pausing to sip his tea.
"But at the end of the war, James abandoned us, James left an empty feeling in the pack, and Madam Felicia, that cunning and greedy old bitch, took that opportunity to seize control of the wolves that were loyal to James." His father said.
Maximus looked at his father in silence.
His father sighed, his face filled with anger, he took another sip of his tea, this time emptying the cup.
"James and I were like brothers, we grew up together, we did basically everything together. When it was time for war, We fought side by side, madam Felicia split the pack warriors as at then into two, so we could conquer more packs, James led one side and I led the other, James liked to act like he was some strategic genius and he would always lure the enemies into his trap before attacking, while me on the other hand, I loved to just attack them head first, because as a warrior, we have nothing to fear, I always lost a lot of wolves in my fights, while James hardly lost any wolves, that was why a lot of those fools wanted him as the alpha instead of me.”
His father paused.
“My grandfathers were all alphas of this pack in the past, yet those fools began to conspire against me that James would make a better alpha. They saw him as a smart, fearless, and strategic leader. I, on the other hand, was seen as some raging mad wolf.”
His father paused and began to laugh to himself.
“Which is why, when James left, I was happy, I mean, we had basically conquered almost all of Europe, all I had to do was maintain stability in the pack and keep everyone safe, yet those foolish wolves couldn’t heal from James leaving, they all wanted him back.”
Maximus looked at his father.
"What of Madam Felicia?" He asked.
Maxwell rolled his eyes, laughing to himself.
"That old greedy wolf, she exploited those stupid wolves, gathering James's loyal followers and used them as her own power base. Now, she controls half our pack, and I'm forced to share authority with her."
Maximus frowned, still looking at his father.
"So if I marry Amara..."
His father nodded.
"Yes… if you marry her, you will unite the pack. With James's bloodline on your side, you'll gain the loyalty of Felicia's followers. You'll be the true alpha, no one would share power with you."
Maximus slowly nodded.
"And what if I don't?" He asked.
His father laughed.
"That will be the most foolish decision you will ever make, you will struggle to maintain control. Felicia will continue to play her silly games under your authority, and the pack will remain divided."
Maximus slowly nodded, he adjusted his chair to also face the lands his father was always looking at.
The air was cool against his face.
"I see," he said, his voice low and rough.
His father placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Your marriage to Amara isn't just a normal marriage; it's something that must happen. It is your key to securing the pack under your control." He said.
Maximus slowly nodded.
The sun had begun to go down, and the air was cooler, he couldn’t lie, he was also beginning to see why his father loved this place, it made thinking easier.
His father relaxed back in his chair, picking up his tea cup in one hand.
His eyes on Maximus's face.
"Enough of the sad stories, son," he said, his voice harsh.
"It's time for us to face reality." His father said.
Maximus looked over at his father, a little confused.
"I heard from one of our spies that the Red Sky Wolves are trying to expand their territory, and they are doing that by taking from our lands.” Maxwell said, a little angry.
"And you know our numbers aren’t up to their numbers, if we don't act soon, they will soon control all of the packs in Europe soon,”
Maximus looked her at his father, his father looked worried.
"You have to understand what is at stake, Max, so you know why you have to take control of the whole pack," his father continued.
"This marriage to Amara is very important. Once you get married to her you will unify the pack and control all the wolves, with such power, we can easily defeat the red sky wolves before they take any more of our lands.” His father said.
Maximus looked over at his father, he understood everything his father was saying, he knew the marriage was serious.
But still..wasn’t there another way to do it.
He looked over at his father.
“Father, I—"
His father raised his hands, silencing him.
"No buts son! You're the future alpha. You need to start acting like it!"
“Being the alpha will come with a lot of sacrifices, and if you know you can’t take those sacrifices then you can leave the role now.” His father said, his voice harsh.
Maximus stared at his father silently, before slowly nodding.
"I’m sorry father, forgive me, I was just being childish, I will gladly get married to Amara.” He said, forcing a smile on his face.
His father looked up at him, a smile on his face.
Just then , a tall bearded man ran up to where they were.
“My lord, my lord!” The man called as he fell to his knees, bowing.
Maxwell looked over at the man.
“Colin, what is it?” He asked.
“The red sky wolves, they are occupying some of our territories in the far east.” Colin said.
His father turned to face Colin in anger.
“How many wolves do you have with you, where do——
A distant howl rang through the sky, disturbing their conversation.
They all looked at each other.
That was a signal they usually gave to know the number of the enemy.
“That howl… it means they are less than two dozen..” Maximus said.
Colin nodded, he looked up at Maxwell.
“What do we do my lord? Do we confront them or do we retreat since we have a wedding coming up and we don’t want any bloodshed.”
Maxwell shook his head.
“Take three dozen, go after them and lay in ambush. Once they are near any parts of our territory, you attack, that should teach them a lesson.” He said.
Colin nodded and immediately rushed out.
"Those Red Sky Wolves," Maxwell growled, frowning. "They're testing our borders." He said.
Maximus nodded, he had vowed to himself that once he became alpha he would send them extinct.
He would get married to Amara, and take control of the whole pack.
