“D..dad..” Amara stammered. He stared at her, his eyes cold.
“No daughter of mine would act like how you want to act.” He said.
“Dad.. you would rather disown me than end this marriage?” She said, her voice shaky. He looked at her in anger.
"You're so greedy, Amara," he said angrily.
"You are only thinking of yourself, you are not even thinking about this family's well-being." He said.
Amara stared at him in shock, she was hurt by his words.
"Father, how can you say that?" she whispered, tears slowly filled up her eyes.
Her father immediately turned around and walked out of the room angrily, leaving her standing there, her heart felt broken.
She immediately ran to her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
Tears began to pour down her face as she fell on her bed.
She couldn’t believe he would ever say something like that.
Just then she heard a knock on her door.
“Amara!” It was her mother’s voice.
“Your father told me everything honey, can we talk?” Her mother said.
“Mom please go away.” She replied.
Her mom continued to knock, but she put her pillow over her ear ignoring her.
After some time, when she thought she was alone, she heard another knock on the door.
"Amara?" A soft voice called.
She recognized the voice, it belonged to madam Felicia.
“Amara, open this door and let’s talk.” She said calmly.
“Please just leave me alone.” Amara said.
“If you don’t open this door, I will break it down honey, one way or the other, I’m coming in.” Madam Felicia said.
Amara wiped her tears, as she slowly sat up.
"Enter," she said, her voice shaky.
The door slowly opened and Madam Felicia entered the room.
She looked at Amara, a warm smile on her face.
"Amara dear, I heard about everything from your parents." she said, sitting beside Amara on the bed.
"I know it's hard to just get married to someone you don’t know." She said, her voice soft and comforting.
Amara burst into tears again, and madam Felicia gently pulled her towards herself, hugging her.
"It's normal to feel this way," Madam Felicia continued.
"I also had a difficult childhood. I became a mother to our pack at a very young age, I was the only one carrying responsibilities that were too big for my age." She said,
Amara' looked up at her, her tears had reduced.
"I’m sorry about that.”she said, her voice shaking.
Madam Felicia looked away, a sad smile on her face.
"Yes, I've made sacrifices myself," she said, her voice filled with sadness.
"I lost my own family, my parents, when I was just a child.” She paused.
"I had to grow up quickly," Felicia continued. "I had to make decisions I didn’t want to make.” She said,
Amara slowly nodded.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Madam Felicia shook her head, smiling softly.
"There is no need to apologize, child. I’m only sharing this with you so you can understand that sometimes the survival of the ones we love and care about all depends on the hard choices we make." She said,
Amara slowly nodded.
She was beginning to understand what she meant.
"Is that what my marriage to Maximus is?" she asked.
Madam Felicia looked directly in her eyes.
"Your marriage to Maximus is what will reunify our pack. The two sides that have been divided for basically two decades will come together once again, and stand together as one against the Red Sky Wolves." She said.
Amara looked away, a tear rolling down her eye.
"But why me?" she whispered.
“Can’t we unify the pack another way? Can’t you just hand over the one you control to Maximus?” She asked, her voice breaking.
Madam Felicia looked at her, her eyes were still fixed on hers.
"Your marriage will be the bridge between our two sides, as you know, the pack were split between your father and lord Branson, so if you marry Maximus, the wolves on either side would have no choice but to follow you and Maximus, the marriage would bring balance.” Madam Felicia said.
Amara sank deeper into her bed.
"What if I refuse?" she whispered, looking down at her hands.
Madam Felicia’s smile slowly faded away.
“Your family would not be welcome here again, your father would be forced to throw your mother, your sisters and you outside, and trust me, because of your father’s crimes against the wolves of other packs, you and your sisters and your mother would not survive a night away from the territory at a time like this.” She said.
Amara felt her heart sink.
"I don't know if I can do it," she whispered.
Felicia held her hand tighter.
"You must," she said.
“That’s the only way to guarantee you and your family’s lives.”
“You must marry Maximus Branson.”
*
A few days passed and Amara still felt very sad.
Whenever she remembered that her wedding to Maximus was drawing nearer, she would get sad again.
It was in a week’s time, and she wasn’t looking forward to it at all.
She remained in her quarters, not allowing any visitors except from Lara who occasionally came to drop food water or check up on her.
Her mother had tried calling her multiple times and even tried to visit her but she refused to answer her.
Her father never came to visit her, but even if he did, she wouldn’t have answered him.
Amara remained in her quarters ignoring everyone.
To make it all worse, Maximus had come to see her, along with some maids, he had been telling her sweet words, saying how much he wanted to see her and how much he couldn’t wait for the wedding, but she knew he didn’t meant any of it and he was only saying it for the people watching.
Amara still remained in her room.
The only thing on her mind now, was to escape.
If she escaped from the territory, found her way back home to take her passport, maybe she could run away from Europe and head over to her college back in America, she would combine going to classes and having a part time job, she had seen people in her school do it.
She would also take her father’s passport along with her, at least that way he wouldn’t be able to come over to the United States to find her.
Amara smiled to herself, to her the plan was a solid plan, and if she could pull it off, then maybe, just maybe she could escape this life everyone had planned for her.
