'how about we change the sequence entirely, and start off with a flashback?'

nick asks me, tilting his head in a way that makes me feel totally wrong.

two weeks has passed by since his little 'break-out',

we try to ignore that awkward situation as much as we can,

and now we're back as best friends, and better than ever.

and i'm so glad.

i missed nick and his crazy assumptions and

carefree manner.

right now, we're editing our project

for fiction writing.

i stare at my laptop.

facetime :miles

status: connecting...

we can still talk until me and my boyfriend

see each other through our screens.

just a few minutes.

'okay, but we'll have to change the tenses. again.' i frown

at nick, chewing at my pen cap,

staring at our draft paper, covered in green and blue ink.

'god, stop chewing on your pen like that,' nick says,

pulling my pen towards him.

i was holding the pen so tightly that i am dragged too,

into his chest.

he smells like fresh blankets and video games.

'kate?'

i gasp. somebody is calling my name.

'kate!'

i glance at nick in surprise and confusion.

then something hit me.

'oh!'

i scramble to my bed and look at my laptop.

as i had suspected, miles was there.

i wave into the camera vigorously , smiling and saying

'hey miles. i miss you,'

'miss you too, babe. who else is in the room? i heard voices,'

'uhm...you know, just a friend. he's my writing partner,' i say,

glancing at nick who was hidden out of sight.

i don't know why i'm so scared of miles

finding out about me and nick.

after all, we're just friends, right?

'he?'

i tuck my hair into my ears frantically and say,

'uhm, yeah. it's a he. come here nick,'

i say, dragging a reluctant and a half-scared nick into the camera.

'um, hi, mi-iles. good to fi-nal-ly see um, y-you. i've heard a lot.'

nick stammers, managing a forced smile.

miles frowns at the camera.

oh no oh no oh no. this was going downhill.

i try to fix things.

'um yeah! nick is a very great friend. he's my partner for honors writing.'

'yes, we're very close. you know, you're very lucky to call kate yours,' nick says into the camera.

i give nick a side-ways glance.

'um. cool. nick, can you excuse us for a moment? i just want to speak to kate. privately,'

miles says.

uh-oh.

nick gives me a look that said don't worry.

i wish i didn't.

then he leaves the room silently.

'miles, seriously. he's just a friend, i promise,' i say, closing my eyes.

'i know, kate. and i love you very much. very, very, much.

but i don't want you talking to that nick,

you understand?

he seems very...... off.'

'but, miles. he's my best friend.' i blurt out in desperation.

'and i'm your boyfriend, am i not? just.. do what i tell you to. i don't want

some other creep liking you. you're mine. okay?' miles asks.

i have to end this conversation before things get worse.

biting back tears, i mumble,

'okay, sorry. bye,'

and press end call.

miles is a dick bye
