Who could imagine that organizing "a few" things for a time away from home would turn into chaos?
Leonardo could.
His family had never had the chance to leave the sewers, they had lived in the same place all their lives so they had no idea what was useful to carry and what was not in a case like this.
— I can't help you, Deep Blue — Leon answered when Leonardo asked him what he knew about it — the only time Dad took us camping he took everything from us and left us out in the open, abandoned to our fate — the older turtle wiped away his imaginary tears with his only hand — I almost had to eat Donnie to survive — he lowered his hand until it rested on his plastron while letting out a sob. Leonardo looked at him with a raised eyebrow, it was obvious that Blue was exaggerating, but... Did their dad really abandon them in a forest without food? Maybe he would do it with the twins, but Angelo and Raph didn't deserve that treatment.
Donnie walked past them and, upon hearing them, unfolded his mental notebook to include a new note.
— Deep blue, noted — he murmurs.
— What's that, Dee?
— A list of the nicknames Leon has given us — the younger genius answers looking at his older brother and he is surprised to see Donatello's eyes shine in a soft purple — take 4 for you, 3 for Raph, 3 for me and 2 for Mikey — he lists.— I don't like Baby Red very much — Rapha joins the conversation while carrying a couple of boxes in his arms — but Scarlet is the best — Leon gives an arrogant smile to the youngest red and he responds with a movement of his eyebrows. Leonardo takes a deep breath, of course, the chaotic twins had to get along with the most dangerous of their family.
—Tall Blue is terrible at giving nicknames — Mikey could barely be seen behind the tower of blankets he was balancing in his arms — that's why I'm Doctor Name-enstein.
— Please, Tall Blue is a terrible nickname, Tangerine — he complains — it should be something more epic like The Greatest Ninja History Has Ever Seen or something — Leonardo watches Donnie walk away calmly and envies him for being able to escape the nickname war that is brewing around him — you are unworthy of the name Name-enstein — in the young blue man's opinion, both are terrible at it, but he is not going to say anything so as not to create a joint front against him.
—If you don't want "another" doctor to come visit, you'd better get to work, Leo — Angelo lands in front of his oldest brother, dropping a rather large cooler at his feet — manage to carry it to the van.
A shiver ran through everyone present at the low tone used by the almost always kind and sweet Angelo. Everyone quickly returned to their duties in silence.
At about six in the evening, Abril called to say that she and her father would go to the agreed-upon place in the van; the place was a gated exit that led to a deep concrete channel that ran, like a spine, through some of the city's streets before meeting the sea. It was discreet and big enough for Rojo to walk freely, since he was in charge of all the heavy stuff.
The last group came out of the sewer, Leon carrying the cooler on his shoulder, Mikey handed half of the blankets to Angelo because he tripped several times because he didn't see where he was going, Leo and Raph carried two boxes of food each and the youngest leader also carried a backpack with Mikey's precious comics, given with all the ceremony for being the "only" trustworthy one in the family. Leonardo doesn't know whether to feel flattered by that or admit that he just opened a door for his little brother to get whatever he wants using that argument.
Karai joined them halfway there; she risked going to her apartment to get some things, she assumed that Shredder, with all the chaos of the collapsed building, the surprise of other turtles wandering around there and the betrayal of his "daughter" would not have had time to intervene in his house so she was going to take advantage of rescuing all his most valuable things. She had not been in the city for long so it is not that she had much, but she did have to rescue some items from her past that she did not risk losing. As the young people approached, they noticed that she was chatting happily, in Japanese, with someone on the phone. The Hamato of the present knew quite a bit of the Japanese language thanks to the teachings of their father so they understood very well what the kunoichi was saying and, although they tried not to spy, curiosity got the better of them and they paid attention.
