She returns,
to that room full of classmates
she is unknown to.
To her seat where no one could see her
in the back of the room.
In all the time she was away
no one recognized her absence.

But as she looks across the room,
she is mesmerized
by a sea of bright smiling faces.
Bringing her a simple thought,
a yearning to be able to join them too.
