Chapter 16

Chris pressed the doorbell and waited for a second, listening to the rushed footsteps on the other side.

“One second,” Amy called; leaping towards the door handle and yanking it open with a smile. But it quickly disappeared when she saw who it was. Of course they were still friends but it reminded her of how she’d let herself feel for him and what she’d almost confessed to him.

“Oh, hey,” she said with a troubled frown, running her hand down her blonde hair in hopes of smoothing out of some of the knots. It was Sunday night and she hadn’t been excepting company so imagine her surprise that Chris – who should really have been out of her hands by now considering that he was dating another girl – showed up at her door looking as handsome as ever.

His polo collar was hiked up a bit at one side but that was the only imperfection that Amy could see of Chris’s.

“Hi,” he chirped back, walking into her home and not giving her a second glance towards her pyjamas. Amy self-consciously wrapped her arms around herself with an uncomfortable smile and followed him towards the kitchen.

“Um, Chris,” she asked quietly. He quickly turned his head towards her in response, giving her his full attention, “Not that I don’t want you here or anything... but what are you doing here?”

Chris chuckled and walked back over to her, still unaware of her discomfort, “I don’t know. I was thinking maybe we could watch a movie or something,” he suggested with a shrug.

Wasn’t that what boyfriends and girlfriends did? They watched movies together and ended up making out on the couch? Amy laughed at herself mentally as she over analysed the situation. Of course Chris wouldn’t want to kiss her – and she him considering the bet – but a pang of longing crossed her before she responded breathlessly.

“Sure,” she said with a tiny smile. Amy looked up at him as he leaned over her. They were really close now but Amy couldn’t seem to remember how that had happened. Her hands clenched and unclenched at her sides and she bit her lip, a nervous habit that she’d never been able to shake.

Chris pushed his head down and forwards, making it so they were only inches away and Amy’s heart began to race. He was going to kiss her... wasn’t he? That was how the Hollywood movies always did it. The girl and the boy, centimetres away from each other when he clamped the back of her neck with his hand, pulling her forwards.

She knew this was wrong and Amy really didn’t want to lose the bet. But through the attempts of Karen, Liz and Julie of convincing her that Chris had feelings for her, and her own selfish excitement, she couldn’t resist him.

“I’ll make us some popcorn,” he said with a smirk, moving away from her quickly and spinning off towards the microwave and pushing in a bag of popcorn as if nothing had happened.

Amy let out a breath that she hadn’t known she’d been holding in and frowned, “Okay,” she mumbled unconsciously, plopping herself down on the couch and trying to figure out what had just happened. Had Chris wanted to kiss her or was that just her imagination? And if it was, did that mean that Chris knew that she liked him and was trying to steal that kiss and win the bet? But if those were his motives, why hadn’t he?
