Chapter 3 – A pickle of a dragon jam

Duane's hope that he had finally met his mate increased with every second he spent in Millie's company. Why had he been staking out the shop she worked at? She was but a simple human, mortal and fragile. He found that he couldn't help but be there to protect her. He tamped down on the hope for fear that he could be wrong yet again.

A dragon finding their mate was no simple or instant realisation. With dragons living for as long as they did, there was a lengthy and arduous process to discovering who their mate was.

The first step was naturally having a liking for the person. Millie was the first woman he had enjoyed being around in many decades. She was honest and funny, kind and so damn adorable that he couldn't stop smiling when she was in his vicinity. She was unique amongst many women he had known.

The second step was of course attraction. Duane had found himself not just drawn to her looks but also her alluring presence. She had a way of tilting her head so her delicate golden blonde hair caressed her cheek that fascinated him. Her smile enticed him and her soft brown eyes that sparkled when she laughed had him spellbound.

Overall, the most unfortunate thing for Duane was that there was only one true test that would prove they were mates. Sex of course was the final proof. It was said that dragon mates had the most explosive sex together. He knew though that Millie was not one for casual encounters, so he was unable to test his theory.

"Thank you for today." Millie said softly as they sat in the coffee shop at a small table together.

"Believe me when I say that was my pleasure. Men like your old boss tend to make the rest of us look immoral and bad." Duane said before taking a last bite of the donut in front of him.

"Nobody could make you look bad, surely." She teased him and Duane awarded her with a small, sexy smile.

"Why thank you, my lady." He licked the cinnamon sugar from his lips and wondered if her skin would taste as delicious as she smelt.

"I'm sure you're used to the compliments." She let out a small laugh, having no idea where her flirting behaviour was coming from.

"Never from someone as beautiful as you."

He couldn't help but lift her hand and gently kiss the back of it. She shivered, her eyes closing at the intimate air surrounding them.

How quickly things turned cold though. Duane froze in the middle of caressing her hand. His eyes, molten gold only moments before turned aloof. He quickly dropped her hand as he watched someone enter the café. His whole body stiffened before he abruptly stood and left.

Millie sat there feeling perplexed at his odd behaviour. She wasn't even able to see the person that he had run off after. She finished her coffee regardless and put everything down to the crazy day that she was having. She reached for her handbag, now feeling disappointed at how things had turned out.

"I do apologise Millie." At Duane's voice, she raised her head to face him.

"You have to admit that was a bit strange." She lifted her brows at him, questioning his behaviour.

"I think the only way to explain it is to say that I have a sister similar to yours. She can be quite..." He trailed off, an angry scowl filling his face.
