Powers

Hello! I'm finally back to give you another chapter to help you make your oc's! This chapter will be about giving them powers. (If your universe you're in has powers that is.)

First I should start by mentioning something that I kinda said above. If your universe that your oc is living in does not have any powers, (Like Earth) then you should be careful when giving your oc many powers. You want to avoid making a Mary Sue or Marty Stu.

Here is an example: A girl who can bend water at her will into any shape, has super strength, can morph herself, and can talk to animals.

That is a bit much. Do you see what I'm saying?

A less Mary Sue/ Marty Stu would be: A girl who controls water, can talk to sea animals and can see underwater with clarity.

See how that's a bit better? It sounds like the character could be a cannon character in something. Her powers are all water related!

If you were to put the example character from above in the Harry Potter universe she wouldn't fit in. But, if you put her in the Percy Jackson universe it would fit better.

If you're going with an oc that is more superhero style maybe try thinking of a theme for your hero.

For example- the character above has a water theme.

Don't go overboard. That's the secret.

You can have an oc that is supposed to be in the real world that has powers if that's the plot or something. Just use your judgement and ask yourself, is this too much? Could they be a cannon character somewhere?

Everything I'm saying applies to villains too.

If your oc discovers they have powers by themselves, for example waking up and finding out they can talk to their pet cat. I don't think they'd be calm about it at first. Maybe they'd think they're going crazy? Maybe other people think they're going crazy?

Or if your oc gets told by another person that they have powers, maybe they don't know how to use them at first?

Ask yourself what you'd do in a similar situation and then take in your character's personality and compare to see how they'd react.

I think that's pretty much it. Just use your judgement the best you can and decide for yourself if you think they're good.

I think next update will be their past life.

I hope this update made sense.

Thanks!
