In 1898, Nikola demonstrated a radio-controlled boat. He was very zealous, diligent in applying for patents as so much of his discoveries and inventions were stolen or others had their work patented after Nikola first discovered things.

During an electrical exhibition at Madison Square Garden, the crowd that witnessed the demonstration made outrageous claims about the workings of the boat. They said ridiculous things such as Nikola used magic, or mental telepathy. Some stupidly said the boat was being piloted by a trained monkey hidden inside.

Nikola contacted someone in the U.S. military to try to sell them on the idea of a radio-controlled torpedo, but they showed little interest.

Remote radio control remained a novelty. They felt they had no use for it.
