“What the hell?!”

My eyes widen. “It’s not good to swear, you know”

He ignored me. “Who told you we can’t talk?”

“It’s not important,” I say.

“It sure is! I'm your friend. I should be able to talk to you!”

I blush. I didn’t mean to, but... I felt happy. I forgot all that Mummy told yesterday, and actually felt hopeful. “Really?” I ask. “You’re really my fri...”

“’course!” he says. “Now tell me who came up with this ridiculous idea!” he looks so angry.

I turn away. “My mum” I whisper.

Silence. I turn back. His expression changes. Confusion. Then worry.

“Why?”

“Coz.... I ... I can’t talk about it” I say, and turn away, and start running. I can’t see where I'm going. I just let my feet take me away. I hear footsteps behind me all along, but I don’t stop. “Hey!” I hear his voice behind me, but I speed up. “Wait up”

He was fast, though, and could easily catch up with me. I turn and run down another corridor. Before I know it, I'm out of the school gates.

I turn around in panic. This is not good. I could get into so much trouble. But I couldn’t back, because he was there, wanting to know why, and... I couldn’t explain.

He comes in closer. I forget completely about school, and run.

Trip.

...fall.

He falls on me.

“Ow-” I gasp, “heavy”

“Sorry” he says awkwardly, and gets up. I struggle to get back onto my feet, but he stretches out a hand. I grip it thankfully, and he helps me up. “Now tell me...” he begins.

“Wait!” I cut him across. He looks at me expectantly, but nothing comes out.

Then I blurt, “I don’t know your name”

A pause.

I blush red. He blurts out laughing, which makes me go redder, if possible.

“How can you not know? I'm famous! Why, Sir announced my reputation on the very first day, and he did it with a proper introduction, you know. He told it. You know my name”

He sounds so confident. But... I couldn’t remember any such thing... I couldn’t remember...

“Let me boost your memory” He says with a smile. “I am Samrin Maccerson” he does a fancy bow, and ends up kneeling before me, “at your service. Your wish is my command” he winks.

“Samrin...?” I say, unsure.

“Yes?”

“Ain’t that a girl’s name?”

I squeal- he is after me with a murderous look on his face. “I'll get ya for that!”

“I'm sorry, I'm sorry” I scream back, never stopping, till I'm back at school, inside our class. We are laughing so hard, people actually turn and stare. I don’t care. Not anymore.

‘Samrin Maccerson...’ I think to myself. And smile.

“And that is how you do long division” Sir concluded his lesson. “I want you to do all the sums on page 5 of your books, as well as the first five on page 6. Get started, I want to hear no noise from you lot”
