Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
My deep breaths fill my ears as the beeps become louder and my ears pop. Twitching my fingers my hands come to feel scratchy sheets. My eyelids feel heavy and as I try to open them I get a sliver of light and then I close them again.
Struggling I move uncomfortably around in the sheets.
"Woah woah woah there." Comes a familiar voice. I'm lightly pushed back on the bed. Then someone puts a hand on my forehead as they push my hair back. I can feel my heartbeat in my chest beating widely.
"Lyra.." Came a shushed whisper. I struggled to open my eyes. My eyelashes tangled and I finally got my eyes open. Bright light blinded my vision and I narrowed my eyes to block some of the light.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
A shadowy figure then covered the light by moving in front of it. A familiar face staring down at my own.
My blurry vision then aligned and I could make out the eyes I knew too well.
My lips broke out into a dry smile. "Barry."
"Hey." He whispered.
I went to sit up but he pushed me down again and then sat by me on the bed. I then stubbornly pushed my weight forward resisting his hands.
"I'm fine." I croaked.
He raised a eyebrow. "Water?"
I nodded.
Grabbing a full cup of water nearby it was silent as he passed it between my hands and his. I almost dropped it because I felt so weak but he quickly grabbed ahold of it also and helped me raise it to my mouth.
Setting it down in my lap I stared at the transparent water as my mind drifted and searched for the last thing that I could remember.
I cleared my throat as I brought my head up to meet his eyes. "What happened?" Tucking a piece of hair behind my ear I watched him expectant.
He shook his head in disbelief. "You were right." He chuckled. "I was walking to work. And then a blur of wind blew against me. All of the sudden he was there. Red suit, blurred face. All in all. The Streak." He paused. "He grabbed me and rushed me to the hospital and in a blink." Barry snapped his fingers. "Then I was here seeing you, on a rolling bed, being rushed into the ER."
He chuckled. "You were right Lyra." I lightly laughed and shook my head.
Pulling up my hospital gown I saw my waist and stomach wrapped in a clean white bandage. Lightly touching it I pulled my itchy speckled gown down again.
I sighed tired of the quietness. Glancing at Barry I could see something was bothering him. Something seemed off. And the more I seemed to look at him the more I seemed to realize I was right. He was always good at hiding things. Even when we were younger. It was like his disguise. His mask.
And the truth for him - was always hard for him to say.
I watched his back as he pulled something out of his bag. "Hey Bear are you alright?" I questioned with scrunched eyebrows.
He turned as he looked at me. His eyes seemed to hurt. Like he was a baby and had just experienced something he didn't need to see. He broke eye contact with me.
Yup. That's how I knew. Right there. If he broke eye contact then I knew he was too scared to say something, or too ashamed to admit that I was right. That was my hint. That was my answer.
