I know that it's been a while since I last updated, but monuments on Olympus don't just design themselves. Also, the gods know that Percy can't take care of himself so I've also got to take care of him.
Let me ask you a question: Do you really know when to use "that" and when to use "which"? It would surprise you that you might not, and that's okay. Many people have trouble with it. Here's an example:
She prefers to watch movies (that/which) make her cry.
The answer will be at the end of the chapter so you can actually guess without your eyes wandering to the answer.
Thankfully, I've got a cheat that is foolproof. Here is how to do it:
1) Leave the space blank for that/which
Sentence make sense? Use "which".
Sentence doesn't make sense? Use "that".
In case those instructions are a little confusing, here are some examples of using the method:
Example 1:
Nobody likes a dog ____bites.
When you take the blank out and read it through that way, it says "Nobody likes a dog bites". That does not make sense, therefore the answer is "that".
Example 2:
Bob's dog ___ had one ear, won the show.
A little difficult now, isn't it? Just take out the blank and read it through. "Bob's dog had one ear, won the show." Even though it doesn't seem to make that much sense, there is a small exception here. There is a comma (,) and those are usually paired with "which". The only time that you would run into something where "that" would be used in a sentence with a comma is on college essays and stuff like that. Until then, play it safe and use "which".
That's it for "that vs which". I hope that this comes in handy!
Answer to the bolded example question: that
