"Hello Beth." Alison said as I walked into her home. It was very cozy and she motioned me to sit across from her on a couch. "Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?"
"No." I said and fidgeted with my fingers. I thought about what Rick said earlier as we ate breakfast. Stay on guard but learn as much as you can about these people. Once again I had to play a role to keep our group safe. I knew I would have to play off Alison to see what she needed from me so I could gain her trust.
"I've already interviewed Glenn, Rick, and now it's your turn. They spoke very highly of you." She said and I could tell she was trying to get information from me too.
I just nodded.
"What are you good at Beth?" She asked and I thought about the question. I thought about before all this, I could sing, play guitar, piano, ride horses, but now... now I could kill, I could plan to kill and I could run from being killed. As if sensing my hesitation she smiled at me to comfort me. "You seem smart. We're you good in school?"
I held back the urge to roll my eyes. Grades really didn't matter anymore.
"I was a straight A student." I said.
"Impressive. Did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up?"
"My father was a Vet and I enjoyed helping him a lot but I wanted to study law in college. I wanted to help people." I said remembering applying for law school so long ago. It seemed so irrelevant now.
"Law? Really? Well I studied Law and Business in college at Harvard actually. I was a Senator before everything happened."
"I'm sorry, but what does this have to do with anything anymore?" I asked shyly, I didn't want to come off arrogant. Seeming helpless usually worked for me in these situations. I was starting to take on the role of being underestimated.
"I'm just trying to get to know you. I want you to have a purpose within our community so that you'll enjoy living here. Our goal is to make this place thrive and to do that we must have people who are passionate to do so."
"Ok." I said still not sure why I was here.
"I think I know a good job for you." Alison finally said.
"Ok...?"
"You'll work with me. I delegate what goes on within the walls and make plans to enhance the living within the walls as well. I have a feeling you are very creative and can help me design a new plan for expansion. As well as help me host a welcoming party for you and your friends into our community."
"A party?" I asked almost amused. I thought about the endless amount of walkers and people just outside the walls and wanted to vomit. She couldn't be serious.
