Mitch's POV

"Dads, I now have four fingers!" Shouted Skyler from her room. This caused both Scott's and my eyes to go wide. We dropped everything and rushed up the stairs to her room.

"What! Are you okay?"

"Are you bleeding?"

"Do you need to go to the hospital? Wait, of course, you need to go to the hospital because you lost a finger!"

Those questions were asked so fast that even we didn't know who asked them. Skyler just stayed sitting in her desk chair with a strange look in her eyes that I could not figure out. She then bursted out in laughter. She had to hold her stomach from all the laughing when she was finished.

"Oh my gosh, is that what you thought I meant? I was talking scientifically. Our hands have only four fingers- index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky finger- and a thumb. The reason being is that our fingers have three bones- proximal phalanx, intermediate phalanx, and the distal phalanx- while our thumb only has two- distal phalanx and proximal phalanx. See, I now only have four fingers and a thumb- scientific." She explained.

Scott and I nodded, and looked at each other for we did not understand how such a young child could remember terms we have never heard before. We then just walked out of her room.

"So, we took it literal when she meant scientifically?" Scott asked.

"I assume so." I answered.

"I think we should get her back." Scott says as we walk back to the kitchen.

"Like a prank?" I ask, which Scott nodded in a form of saying "yes."

"Do we have any balloons?" Scott asked looking through the fridge.

"Balloons? I don't know, we might still have some from that helium video we did with Hannah a while back." I answered, smiling at the memories of sitting on the bed singing songs in high pitched voices with Scott and Hannah in front of a camera. Good times.

"Okay, so we are going to need to go to the store to buy sprinkles for the decorations and whip cream." Scott says while grabbing the car keys. "Skyler, Mitch and I are going to the store! Do you need anything?" Scott shouts to her.

"No, just buy me a partner in crime; I lost mine a year ago." Scott and I would like to say she's joking, but she's not. In order to make sure Skyler is okay, we walk up to her room.

"Sweetie, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm good. I've had a year to get used to it." She replied with a small, sad smile on her lips.

"Sweetie, no matter how much time you have to get used to it, you never will. There will always be that ache in your heart. Sometimes, you might not feel it as much. Other times, you will feel it like a brick. Don't try to force getting used to it, it'll make everything worse. Think of all the good memories you had with Emma. Just try to be happy- not sad- when you feel that ache. Okay?"

"Okay. Thanks, Dad." She said hugging me.

"Are you sure you'll be okay while we go out for about half an hour?" Scott asked.

"Yes, I'll be fine. Now, go do what you were going to do." She said shooing us out of her room.

"Did we just get kicked out of our daughter's room?" Scott thought out loud as we walked down the stairs to the front door.

"I think we did." I answered as we got into the car.

"Okay, what are you planning?" I asked him while he turned the car on.
