"I try desperately to run through the sand ⦁As I hold the water-In the palm of my hand⦁Cause it's all that I have⦁And it's all that I need and⦁The waves of the water⦁Mean nothing to me⦁But I try my best⦁And all that I can to⦁Hold tightly onto⦁What's left in my hand."

"I've been a spying on Earth for a few years now," Winston began as he gradually made his way down the road to the city, "My partner, Galatichekasha, was disguised as the old woman, and I, her pet." He spat the word like it tasted bad and continued, "We weren't told much of anything, except to report our day to day experiences back to the home ship for what they called 'examination'. I always knew something was not quite right about our spying. I mean, I understood that our planet was dying and we needed somewhere to live... but some of the things they did..." He shook his head, but didn't look away from the road, "Our original plan was to quietly coexist with the humans, gradually blending in so that they would never even notice the difference, but that all changed when Midaski took the throne."
At this point, I didn't even bother questioning much of what he was telling me. After what had just happened, I thought that I could extend just a little trust to this guy I had only just met. "Midaski?" I queried, prompting him to continue.
He glanced at me. "You're not freaking out yet?"
"It hasn't sunk it yet, so hurry up and finish before it does."
"Right. Anyways, our previous leader, Queen Amidashleshti was fair and just. Everyone agreed with her plan, that we could coexist with the humans and live peacefully with them. We could bask in the resources Earth could provide for us... but then, she died mysteriously. Midaski, her grandson took the throne, and completely changed everything. We all knew he was ambitious, but I never thought he could do something like have his own grandmother assassinated for nothing but a shiny crown. And I know he did it, I just know it. After her death, he decided that humans were too much of a nuisance, and that they must be destroyed or enslaved. He set a termination date for just yesterday... and I couldn't stand by and watch as they all died. I tried to warn them, I tried so hard to save them all but--"
He stopped. I could see tears glistening in his eyes.
My breath caught in my throat, "But?"
He pulled the car over to the side of the road and put it in park. He looked me in the eyes and continued, "This is going to be hard to hear." He warned.
I clenched the sides of my seat. "Just say it."
Nothing could be as bad as this day had been, could it? It was probably noth--
"They murdered 159.4million humans, cutting the U.S in exactly half... the only ones left are hybrids and who I managed to save."
I froze. Shock rippled through me. "You're sure....?" I asked in a faint whisper.
He nodded.
I leaned back in my seat, staring blankly out the window. "Wait, so they did all of this....didn't they?" I gestured to the ruins around us.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, but there's more..."
My breath hitched painfully again. Could I even take anything more than that?
"Well it couldn't be worse, could it?"
"They... took all of the hybrid's families as prisoners." He blurted, looking at me with wide eyes.
