What do you call an "agency" that's top secret, previously government funded, mostly underground, extremely terrifying, thirsts for "alien blood" and my childhood home?
You guessed it: the NightCorps.
What an incredible deception.
We were told we were training to save the world some day. In the brain of a twelve year old boy, I thought they were making us into some kind of super heroes. I mean, with an implied slogan of "Fight crime by night, and snooze by day!", could you blame me for expecting to become some spandex-and-cape wearing hero? In my day dreams as a kid, my brother and I would save the world when they finally came to take over earth. When it all went down, when the "big moment" we had all been training for arrived, I would destroy the aliens for good and rid them of the planet forever... flowing cape and all. I would be the do-gooder that the father and mother I had never met would be proud of. Uncle Tom and my brother Caleb would be waiting to congratulate me after I had hung up my cape and washed my hands of the evil aliens. A happily ever after that I had always wanted. One that I thought I could really have some day.
I was wrong. So very wrong.
And the entire mess started the day I spotted something quite unusual during my patrol...
The Corps were all sleeping. It was broad daylight, and I was on patrol. We had been told that no had survived outside of the city, and that the aliens had taken over police forces, so no one was coming to help any possible survivors. I now knew that either the Council had lied, or we currently had two miracle survivors.
I was currently watching their Jeep from a second story window. I saw them come through the woods early in the morning, which struck me as odd. Why not use the roads? After all, there wasn't any traffic. You would cut through the woods as a shortcut maybe-- or if they were hiding from something, I thought to myself as I observed a male get out of the vehicle. He was tall with dark shaggy hair and wasn't wearing any shoes. I decided that if they really were hiding from someone or something, he was probably looking for a hideout. Now where would he go to do that? The city had plenty of hiding places, but as far as they knew, the city was still inhabited above ground. Well that crossed the city off the list for them, so their only option was back in the woods. The male, as I predicted, trudged back into the forest. It was ideal. Lot's of cover and no one to disturb or spot them.
As soon as his back was turned to me, I left my look out window quickly and made my way to the ground floor. I exited the building and went first to the Jeep to see why the other survivor had stayed in the car. I could see from the passenger side mirror that she was sleeping. I walked around the car to get a better look. She was curled up in the seat like a cat with her head resting against the seat belt. Her long brown hair was messy and covered most of her face, but from what I could see, she was beautiful. She must have dreaming, her eye twitched and she frowned slightly, disrupting her peaceful expression. I turned quickly away from her and began to follow the male. His tracks were clear as day and he hadn't gone very far. I followed him for a full ten minutes and he was oblivious the entire time. He had found a clearing with an abandoned hunting shack. How perfect. I left him there and went back to check on the girl. I didn't know why I cared. It's not like she could contribute much to the Corps. We had at least ten people for every job that needed to be done, but I did need to report back and tell the council about both of them.
