unexpected plot twists

We all love those moments when we are proved completely wrong, when it turns out the killer wasn't the lead suspect but instead the baker from down the road. These unexpected ends make any mystery/thriller book memorable and leaves goosebumps on the reader's arms as they try to process what they've been told.

I love these kind of ends, one that leave the reader questioning all they ever thought about the book. But to carry this out you need to plan beforehand. This is key as it means that throughout the plot you can keep the reader oblivious to what is really happening. I suggest making the reader think one thing throughout but make it not so obvious otherwise they will suspect that something else is going on. You want them to be totally surprised.

Books that can pull this ending off are, for me, the best M/T books purely because they leave me speechless.

NB what can make unexpected ending even better? Leave little clues throughout the book which will only make sense when the reader knows the ending. This is just a nice little touch to add.
