i know (what he did)

"hey,yerim. is your sister home?"

i nod, "she's in her room."

he smiles and walks past me,running upstairs to her room.
i follow, he doesn't notice.

i creep up the staircase and look through the crack in the door.
my sister and sungjae and sitting on her bed,
her face is lowered and he's trying to see what's wrong.

when she finally looks up, her words repeat in my head.

"i'm pregnant."

part of my world collapses, my sister, the scholar,

pregnant.

"hey, no time for jokes." he laughed,
"you really know how to scare me."

he stops talking when he sees her eyes watering, a whimper leaves her lips.

his face turns blank and he leans back against her wall.

"shit,"

she lets the tears fall down her pretty face, and i know what she's thinking.
her future is gone, she always said when she has kids they'll come first.
i think of ways to help her, to soothe this bump in the road.

"i'll bring you to the clinic today,"

my mouth parts in shock, her head snaps up again to see him.

"no."

"no?"

i back away from the door and head downstairs quietly, i hear them yelling.
i hear her screaming for him to leave her alone.

he does.

walking down the stairs he smiles at me.

"later, kiddo."
