'So what does a mistress want with me?' I laughed nervously for the second time that day, trying to calm my nerves, which wasn't really happening seeing how my heart was jumping out of my chest.

Lucian sighed, his hands on the steering wheel of his Jeep, the demon had opted for someone more ''blend worthy'' when he noticed his usual car was gaining too much attention.

'It's a long story,' he replied finally.

'You better start talking then,' I muttered, staring out at the rain that was starting to pour from the heavens.

Lucian gave a long sigh and I watched him pinch the bridge of his nose, 'She is someone I begged Father to save long ago,' he whispered, his eyes tight on the window full of droplets in front of him, 'She had devoted her life to Him, she is His servant'.

I swallowed the bile that was rising up my throat. To know that I'd come in such close contact with this woman and hadn't felt the usual tingly fear that I had when associated with demons. To know she slipped past what I thought was my safety net, 'What does she want to do with me then?'

Lucian chuckled softly, it was probably the most bitter I had heard him sound for a while now, 'Probably to check on how far I am on completing the job'.

I mouthed the word: job. After all, that was all I was. Why did I feel that ache in my chest then? I already knew this. Maybe it just hurt more when he confirmed it.

'Will you get in trouble?' I questioned.

Lucian surprised me with a laugh, 'Shouldn't you be worried about yourself? Eva can't do anything to me that she hasn't done before. And I can handle that'.

I watched his knuckles turn white as he gripped the steering wheel, when he pulled away I winced as I noticed the slight dents, 'Her name is Eva? Is that some kind of ironic poke at the Adam and Eve story?'

Lucian's lips quirked up, 'It is. Her real name was Juliana,' the car turned up the estate, 'We deemed that too Christian'.

'Why do I have to be at your house Lucian?' I whispered, trying to concentrate on the blurring scenery of green fields as the car travelled up the gravel to the mansion I had been to once.

'If you're on my grounds, on my territory, I have rights to deny her access to you,' he replied, nearly gently as he pulled the car over in front of the front door, 'Come on'.

'I thought you'd have heaters,' I whispered, teeth chattering as we sat on the carpet in the big living room. The one that I hadn't noticed that fateful night of the party.

Lucian ignored me as he stretched his hands out to the ancient fireplace, murmuring soft words as a fire ignited slowly. Quickly he threw in a couple of logs and soon there was a crackling fire going on.

I moved as close to the fire as I dared without getting burnt, but still my teeth chattered.

'You're hopeless,' Lucian growled at me as he sat down next to me and pulled me into his embrace. Instantly our skin burned at the close contact and it became warm.

'I guess this protection spell can have some sort of benefits,' I muttered to myself.

From behind me I heard Lucian snort, 'Bloody benefits. It just makes my life more difficult'.

I smiled silently, watching the firey flames lick up the wood, 'Who do you think put that spell on me?'

Lucian shrugged, 'Not sure. I think it'd be someone close to you, who dabbled in spells and such. And who obviously knew about the mythical world'.
